BISS List 1.4.24: Spotlight on Object Heavy x Boot Juice (1.11) + Best of BISS this Week

Happy New Year BISS List Crew!

Still feeling the afterglow (and slight hangover) from that epic week of non-stop New Year’s celebrations?   My brain feels like a disco ball after spinning all over the city for shows and ending every night with late-night jams & shenanigans at the Boom Boom Room but the memories are pure cosmic glitter.

It all started with a cozy New Year’s pre-celebration dinner with friends on last Weds that spilled into the late night hours. Then, bang! The rest of the week exploded into a kaleidoscope of gigs. First up on Friday was Karl Denson at The Fillmore. Pure magic. Dude’s got the smoothest sax in the universe, and that crowd was groovin’ hard in honor of his birthday. Then there was Ricky G (from Karl D) channeling the Meters at Boom Boom Room – talk about a funky flashback!

Saturday was mind-blowing from beginning to end. The old-school punk band “X” warmed up the Warfield stage for Remain in Light which was legendary enough with Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew but add in that mix of Cool Cool Cool and the energy in that room was absolutely electric. Everyone in the crowd was blown away!⚡️Followed that up with some funk from Smokey the Groove to warm up the stage at the Boom Boom Room for LAZWELL’s Ziggy Stardust Tribute set. Epic! Then we got a full set of LAZWELL’s funky groovy soulful rock n roll going super late night! Did I mention all the special guests for the LAZWELL sets? Including (but not limited to) Jimmy Leslie, Lady Chi & Jordan Feinstein! I am not sure which set was more fire that night. I think I am still tingling from all of it!

Then, for our grand finale, Afrolicious on Sunday, NYE at the Boom Boom Room! The perfect way to close out the year – dancing to infectious beats with the whole Boom Boom crew and all the rest of you who showed up throughout the night. It was heartwarming to see everyone from all corners of our music scene come together under all those balloons for one last hurrah of 2023. (Tho, technically, it was 2024 by the time I saw most of you 😜)

Seriously, this past week was a testament to the amazing music community we have here in the Bay Area. The multitude of shows, the late nights & the shared love of good music – it all comes together to create something truly special. ✨

So here’s to the renewal of the year, to new beginnings, and to even more incredible shows and musical moments in 2024! Let’s keep the dance floor alive, shall we?

I know that you were all probably expecting a full multimedia extravaganza of sights and sounds from our whirlwind week of musical adventures from all 7 sets. But hold your horses, BISS List crew, because even this seasoned show-hopper needs a minute to catch their breath. So, for now, I’m gonna keep you in suspense (just a little!). Head over to my page later this week to watch the epicness unfold as I put up photos and stories from each show. Trust me, the wait will be worth it. And if that’s not enough, keep an eye on the BISS List’s Instagram! I’ll be dropping some killer video clips to give you a taste of the raw energy that filled every venue.

And hey! 2024 is hitting the ground running with a sonic boom!  The BISS List calendar‘s already bursting with epic shows this week and next, and I can’t decide where to start! Two nights of pure dancefloor fire with BoomBox at the Independent? Sign me up! Dustbowl Revival‘s gonna bring the Americana heat to the Sweetwater next week (*WIN*) so get ready for some boot-stompin’ good times! And then there’s Object Heavy and Boot Juice teaming up at the Independent on the 11th! Double the dose of riff-tastic goodness? Yes, please! Seriously, this is just the tip of the iceberg!  For more info on the Object Heavy & Boot Juice show next week, check out the Spotlight below!

Object Heavy’s magnetic blend of classic Cadillac soul, effortlessly contagious dance grooves, vocal harmonies, and blazing musicianship is ripe for a live experience you don’t want to miss. We spoke with Brian Swislow, the keyboard player from Object Heavy and he told us, “We’re honored to take the stage at The Independent. After two raging support slots with Rebirth Brass Band, and then Orgone, we couldn’t be more fired up for this one!”

Boot Juice plays music that will attempt to bring you to the street corner, the river side, or the open highway. Shifting effortlessly between driving bluegrass and americana into cosmic rock’n’roll and swing.

Oakland-based Litty DeBungus is a 6 piece funk ensemble featuring a horn section, powerful vocals, and a rhythm section that’ll blow your socks off.

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “Get out Your Ear’s Way” by Lachy Doley ft Bootsy Collins from the album A World Worth Fighting For (Released 2023).

About this tune featuring the one and only Bootsy Collins, Lachy Doley said, “As that 14 year old kid nerdy keys player catching the bus to Adelaide’s big star records every day after school, searching for the next piece of sonic gold, that then came to me in the form of P-FUNK, Uncut Funk, The Bomb, Funkadelic and Parliament. I could never ever have dreamed I’d be working with the FUNK Pioneer and legend Mr Bootsy Collins. WTF.. I pretty much listened to him, Bernie Worrell and George Clinton’s music like my life depended on it, influencing and infiltrating every part of my playing and writing to which I owe so much.” The song is “all about opening yours ears and freeing your mind to all points of view before judging so quick.”
