BISS List 6.30.23: Ezra Lipp’s 40th Bday Shindig (7.11) + Sunshine of Love MiniFest (7.28) + Best of BISS this Week

Hello BISS Listers!

Jenni here filling in again for Pamela while she is away at High Sierra Music Festival.

#LastWeekend The Iceman Special delivered two nights of roaring, simmering, swamp funk at Boom Boom Room. Phil captured some pics and video of the first night, check it out here.

#ThisWeekend kicks off with WANTED: A DangerAte Funktion (*WIN*) tonight @ Neck of the Woods. It was at this very venue at a show like this that BISS was born! If you didn’t already, read all about it here. And in a merging of two beautiful things, Prince’s horn section & Paul Simon’s band come together to create Groove 8, playing two nights @ Boom Boom Room, tonight (*WIN*) and Saturday (*WIN*) I’m also really excited for Santigold @ Stern Grove on Sunday.

#MarkYourCalendars for Ezra Lipp’s 40th Birthday Show & Shindig (7/11) and Sunshine of Love’s MiniFest with Smoked Out Soul & Pamela’s Parker’s Fantastic Machine (7/28) – more on both in our spotlights below.

But wait, there’s more! This week’s #ListenToThis is “City Federal Building” by St. Paul & The Broken Bones. Be sure to check it out below!

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “City Federal Building” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones, from their new album Angels in Science Fiction.

Frontman Paul Janeway had this to say about the song, “City Federal Building is an actual building in Birmingham, which is my daughter Marigold’s hometown. It is where she was born, and where I was born. It’s a pretty prominent feature in the skyline of Birmingham, so you can’t really miss it. There are two folds with this. The idea of understanding ‘Why are we here? Are we just here to build and destroy?’ That’s in the song asking her, telling her. It is like I’m taking her up to the top of the building and showing her those things.”

St. Paul and the Broken Bones just played at Blue Note Napa a few weeks ago, but they will be back in the bay area again later this year at the Castro Theatre.

Why should you “Listen to This”? – BISS (Because I Said So). Check out the complete Spotify playlist with all weekly songs! #moretocome
