BISS List 5.15.24: Spotlight on High Sierra Music Fest (4.4-4.7) + Best of BISS this Week

Hello BISS Listers 🙂

Jenni here while Pamela is en route to Golden Road Gathering. Let’s dive right in!

Last Week in Photos: Have we mentioned how thrilled we are to have photographer Gabriel Barkin on the BISS team? I know we have — but it definitely bears repeating. We’ve got another on his reviews for you, this time supergroup The High Hawks at Hopmonk Tavern Novato, featuring members of Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, Hard Working Americans, and other notable jam bands. We also used Gabe’s photos to create an IG reel of some great moments from Mill Valley Music Festival, and you can see even more of Gabe’s MVMF photos at Grateful Web. And as a bonus, we’ve got a review with an enormous gallery of photos from the 2nd weekend of NOLA Jazz Fest.

On to This Week: Don’t forget to consult the Best of BISS for a full list of options, but here’s a roadmap to get you started. For those of you who aren’t headed to Golden Road Gathering, you can still get a taste with Polyrhythmics (*WIN*) at Ivy Room on Thursday 5/16 before they make their way to GRG. Later that night head back over the bridge to get your free music fix with DangerAte at Boom Boom Room. Friday 5/17 you can catch Litty deBungus with Fourth Position at Brick & Mortar Music Hall. And Saturday 5/18 it’s all about Afrolicious (*WIN*) at Boom Boom Room.

Looking Ahead: Next Wednesday 5/22, I hope to see you at the Black Tie & Tye Dye Gala (*WIN*). I’m so excited for Bone Diggers (celebrating the music of Paul Simon) ft Reed Mathis, Lebo, Mookie Siegel, Steve Adams, and Scott Rager. I love Paul Simon and can’t wait to see their take on some of my faves. The BISS List is a sponsor of this event, and we are thrilled to work with HealthRight 360 who support thousands of low-income clients and people experiencing homelessness with nonjudgmental, compassionate health care.

Summer Plans: It’s that time of year, and though it might not feel like it so much now, we had some hot days last week to remind us that summer is approaching. Which means festival season! We’ve got a couple of festival spotlights for you below, keep scrolling!

As Always: Check out the Win Tickets page and don’t forget there is more on the Full Calendar.

But wait there’s more! Check out this week’s song selection, “Rollin’ (Love Will Be Here)” by Brooklyn Funk Essentials, in the #ListenToThis section below.

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “Rollin’ (Love Will Be Here)” by Brooklyn Funk Essentials, from the album Intuition (Released 2023)

Brooklyn Funk Essentials have been presenting their unique brand of eclectic funk to ecstatic audiences around the world since the early nineties. “Rollin’” is a single from their most recent album, Intuition, which was written and recorded by the group in Stockholm during the pandemic. Understandably the lyrics are about freedom and euphoria of movement and celebration, looking ahead to the return of social gatherings with optimism and hope.

We spoke with the band and they told us that the song is “a favourite from our Intuition album, released last year. The song is a celebration of all manner of ways we can roll with our friends – especially after having been locked away during the pandemic. We have some roller skaters, skateboarders and bikers in the band, so we all good. Nothing like rolling in the park with your friends on a summer afternoon. Love will be here!”

Why should you “Listen to This”? – BISS (Because I Said So). Check out the complete Spotify playlist with all weekly songs! #moretocome
