BISS List 8.23.23: Spotlight on JazSFunk + Best of BISS this Week
Happy Birthday to Me TODAY! Yes, it’s today. Yes, I have been celebrating since last Friday. If you read last week’s BISS then you know that it is officially in writing that when a birthday falls on a Wednesday, it’s fair to claim both of the surrounding weekends for a full ten-day week of celebrating.
So let me tell you a little about this past weekend…
#LastFriday the birthday week kicked off with an outstanding event for Blue Bear School of Music. I had never been up to the top of the Salesforce Tower. The views are undeniably breathtaking. Nice job Claire & Ariel on the mic. You two need your own show! Thank you Sunny for reserving us two seats at Boulevard Restaurant for a fantastic dinner. PS. You can still support Blue Bear with a donation. After dinner, I went over to Hyde Street Studios to celebrate with Pamela Parker for HER birthday. Yes, we share our first name and the same birthday week!
#LastSaturday we had an amazing group of friends rocking out together at the Greek for a super fun set with My Morning Jacket. Good times were had by all!
#LastSunday the birthday celebration continued with Flaming Lips at Stern Grove. What an amazing coordinated crew we had for Stern Grove! Thank you to Cecy & Julie for being the 8am crew, to the runners, Lisa, Corey, Britt, Evan & Chris for getting us an amazing space, and to all the others who made the day so fantastic! The Flaming Lips performed Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots in its entirety. The Mayor of SF even declared that it’s Flaming Lips day! I tried to capture this show as best as I could. Thank you Shaggy for doing a much better job than I did and allowing me to include some of them in my post for you to see. My Sunday shenanigans did not stop there. A small group of us continued on to the Makeout Room for the True Loves. They were so good that this week, I am making an exception to my rule of #ListenToThis being limited to songs from the past year (2022-2023). I bought their album, Sunday Afternoon, at the show, so I decided to pick a song from this album. More below in #ListenToThis! I highly recommend that you see them tonight at The New Parish, tomorrow at Moe’s Alley Santa Cruz or Friday at Hopmonk Tavern Sebastopol.
#Tonight after a fancy birthday dinner, if we haven’t had too many libations, we are going to head to Amado’s for Shamarr Allen from NOLA. (You might recognize him from Rebirth Brass Band)
#ThisWeekendInNapa the celebration goes on the road with a trip to Glen Ellen on my way to Napa. I am helping out with an event for a good cause on Saturday, the Mayacamas Volunteer Fire Foundation Starlight Dinner & Auction. Then I am rounding out the birthday week (and month) with Widespread Panic in Napa on Sunday night and an overnight at the Pink Palace. Cause as they say… #NeverMissASundayShow!
ThisWeekendInSF I will be away from the city but for those of you who are here, let me tell you about a couple of shows you might like to see aside from the big ones listed on Best of BISS, like Boz Scaggs. There are two shows you should have on your radar for next Friday night!. #1 Wanted II: A DangerAte Funktion @ Neck of The Woods (*WIN*), more on that in the spotlight below. #2, New Diplomat @ The Chapel SF (*WIN*). They are an up and coming indie, electronic, synth-pop band out of San Francisco whose new single “Away We Go” was just added to Live 105’s Soundcheck.
#NextWeekend on Saturday 9/2, you should already have LAZWELL w/ Marshall House Project at Sweetwater (*WIN*) on your calendar. In case you think you don’t know LAZWELL, check out last week’s BISS List with Spotlight on Lantz Lazwell with info on this show plus a fantabulous Interview with Lantz by BISS List by Contributing Editor, Josh Danson. And while you are at it, check out last week’s #ListenToThis – LAZWELL’s latest single “Killing It” featuring George Clinton!
As always, check out the Best of BISS section and Win Tickets page. And don’t forget there is always more on the Full Calendar.
But wait, there’s more! This week’s #ListenToThis is “SOS” from True Loves. Be sure to check it out below!

LISTEN TO THIS
Listen to “SOS” by True Loves, the zealous, up-tempo opening track from their album Sunday Afternoon.
We spoke to trombone player Jason Cressy and he told us that “SOS” was “written by the band as an intro tune to get us warmed up and introduced to the crowd a bit. Meaning Same Old $hit, ‘SOS’ is heavily influenced by The JB’s – and it slaps every time!”
You can catch True Loves tonight at The New Parish, tomorrow at Moe’s Alley Santa Cruz or Friday at Hopmonk Tavern Sebastopol.
Why should you “Listen to This”? – BISS (Because I Said So). Check out the complete Spotify playlist with all weekly songs! #moretocome
