BISS List 8.14.24: Spotlight on Tab Benoit & Anders Osborne (8.23) + Best of BISS this Week

Happy Hump Day, BISS Listers! What a weekend for live music in the Bay Area! I’m still buzzing from the incredible talent and energy at these shows. Even though it was a bit light (for me) with just one show per day this past weekend, I think I did pretty well. Especially considering that I wasn’t even supposed to be in town! Here’s my rundown:

Friday Night: The China Dolls absolutely blew me away! They brought their powerhouse vocals and endless talent to the Sweetwater Music Hall stage. Their harmonies were out of this world, and the overall performance was top-notch. The parade of guest artists made it a night to remember. Check out my clips from the show to get a taste of the magic!

Saturday: Sean’s birthday got the ultimate soundtrack, with Billy Iuso bringing the party to Marin with New Orleans funk, jam band energy, and classic rock. Highlight? When we heard that “Red Hot Mama” lick right at the end of “Spanish Moon”, we ran straight to the front to dance our hearts out. Check out my album for a glimpse of the good times!

Sunday: The legendary Herbie Hancock graced us with his presence at Stern Grove, and it was pure magic. The atmosphere was electric, seeing familiar faces added to the joy, and the music was phenomenal. Herbie and his band delivered a masterclass in jazz fusion, showcasing brilliance and passion. This concert was a celebration of music’s power to unite and create unforgettable memories. Thank you, Stern Grove! Check out a little of the Jazz masterclass right here.

Sadly, another event I was supposed to work on was canceled, so the good news is I’ll be sticking around the city this week. And what a full week it’s shaping up to be! For some of you, I know it started last night with The Pretenders, and while I’m kicking myself for missing it, there’s still plenty of amazing music to catch.

Confirmed Double Feature Saturday: I’ve got an epic double-header planned! I’ll be catching Remain In Light at China Basin Park for FREE during the day. I think this is the first time they’ve done something like this in this park, right? (I don’t think we can count when we all went there for Shakedown Street for Dead and Co as the same kind of thing). Then we are heading to the Masonic for Gary Clark Jr. (*WIN*) that night.

Upcoming Shows – Help Me Choose! This week’s Best of BISS section is overflowing with options that you can check out inthne section below. I’m having a tough time deciding which shows to attend. Here’s what I’m considering, and I’d love your input:

While I was writing this week’s BISS List, I started listening to all these bands and I created a new Spotify playlist called, “Coming to a Stage Near You.” Hmmm… this could be fun to update! Next Weekend & Beyond: I’ll be working in Napa for a couple of days next week and into the weekend, but I’m definitely hitting up the Groove Summit (*WIN*) on Sunday for Tower of Power & Ghost Note @ Blue Note Meritage in Napa. Come join me for some birthday fun! I’d love to be at the Santa Cruz Mountain SOL Festival all weekend (Congrats to Jennifer D.), but with work in Napa, I can’t be in two places at once. For tht matter, I would also love to be in SF for Tab Benoit and Anders Osborne at The Fillmore (*WIN*). For more info about this show, check out the Spotlight below!

Two blues titans team up for one powerful live performance. Grammy-nominated guitarist Tab Benoit and award-winning musician Anders Osborne take the stage at The Fillmore. On this special night they will be backing each other up as they roll through their extensive catalogs, as well as introducing new material. With special guest songwriter-guitarist J.D. Simo.

Tab Benoit has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an introduction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. New Orleans-based Anders Osborne is celebrated for his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals, and his piercing, expert guitar work. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today and has won over fans through non-stop touring and critically acclaimed collaborations.
