BISS List 4.26.23: Spotlight on NOLA Jazz Fest Nights + Best of BISS this Week

Happy NOLA Jazz Fest BISS Listers!

Yes that’s right! I can’t believe it either! We have already reached the end of April of 2023. Every year tons of us Crazy-for-NOLA-funk-freaks, head to New Orleans for the last weeknd of April and the first weekend of May for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is an annual event that celebrates the unique culture of New Orleans. It is a celebration that brings people from all over the world to experience the city’s unique atmosphere. The festival features live performances by some of the most renowned musicians as well as local artists who bring their own flavor to the event. Additionally, there are food vendors offering delicious local cuisine and artisans displaying their crafts. Whether you’re looking for a fun weekend getaway or just want to experience all that New Orleans has to offer, the Jazz & Heritage festival is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Those of us in the know on #NOLAJazzFest, also know about the night-time shows. In past years, I put together huge listings for the NOLA night-time shows. However, this year I am just going to focus on two Bay Area promoters, Poolside Presents, with 15 shows at Cafe Istanbul and Satisfied Productions with the 9 bands on 2 stages in one night. Back in the Greater SF Bay Area…

Ths past Monday, I got to see my favorite country legend, Willie Nelson, who is going to be NINETY years old this week on April 29! The show was at the Frost and we were a little farther back for most of the show. But I still captured a few moments for you right here.… **Speaking of country music, do you know about BackCountry Festival coming up the first weekend of June?

#ThisWeek, I am pretty sure I know where to find many of you on Thursday and Friday and that is at The Warfield for Goose. Even if you haven’t seen them yet, you have heard about them. There are still tickets for both of these shows but I have a feeling they will sell out, so get on it!

#Friday, a group of us BISS Listers, are headed to the Golden Gate Bandshell for one of my long-time faves, Ronkat’s Katdelic, FREE from 4:30 to 7:30. #joinus

#NextWeek, on Saturday 5/6, Mark Karan’s Buds (*WIN*) is playing their first show of 2023 at Hopmonk in Novato This time around, the “Buds” include Scott Guberman on keyboards; Anna Elva on drums; and Don Crisp on bass guitar. Also next week, here is the city, on 5/5, Fantastic Negrito is @ Great American (*WIN*).

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “We Play The Funk” by Five Alarm Funk featuring Bootsy Collins. This remix with Slynk was just recently released in Janurary of 2023. This song was originally released as a single in 2018 and then appeared on Five Alarm Funk’s album “Big Smoke” in 2020. We have been listening to this song on repeat today and now we can’t get it out of our heads!

I checked in with Tayo Branston, the energetic drummer and vocalist, of Five Alarm Funk. He said that, “Workin with Bootsy was one of the smoothest colabs ever. We took our original tune Capital City and remixed it into a more verse / chorus format, Bootsy was down from the get-go and the legend of funk went full force on taking the vocal reigns. From the first remix versions we knew it was gonna be a banger, smothered in the classic Bootsy vibes we all know and love! It only made sense to bring this tune into the DJ world and Slynk is one of the best around! We couldn’t be happier that this tune has been stamped by masters of their craft and has been blastin eardrums all over the world! “
