Cool Times Three: Interview with Cool Cool Cool

By Pamela Gerstein aka Miss BISS

Cool Cool Cool takes funk, house, and R&B and turns it into a sound that’s uniquely their own. After more than a decade touring the world together with Turkuaz, the band formed in 2022 and has been bringing their high-energy, family-style vibe to stages ever since. With powerful female-led vocals, a horn section that hits hard, and grooves that won’t quit, their shows are all about connection, chemistry, and serious fun.

This week you’ve got two chances to catch them live with Floratura:

  • Thursday Oct 9 at Sweetwater Music Hall (*WIN*)

  • Friday Oct 10 at Moe’s Alley (*WIN*)

We caught up with the band ahead of the shows to talk about their journey, their chemistry, and what first-time listeners can expect.

BISS List: You’ve been on quite a journey together, from Turkuaz to creating Cool Cool Cool. What does this new chapter mean to you as a band?

Sammi Garett: It’s been really exciting and amazing to see how we’ve all grown together, both musically and in our songwriting, and where this journey has taken us. I feel so lucky to be on this wild ride with my incredible bandmates, who are truly my family. This chapter with Cool Cool Cool feels like a celebration, and it’s so awesome that we get to create, grow, and still make music with each other.

Shira Elias: It means that we are fighters and we’re still going strong after all this time, and that is so special. This industry is so tough and will really test you, but after all of the ups and all of the downs, the fact that we’re still doing it and doing it together means the world.

Chris Brouwers: This band has been a totally unexpected opportunity for us to continue to play music and tour the world together. I feel closer than ever to everyone in the band, and I’m so thankful to be given another chance to share amazing experiences with this group.

Craig Brodhead: I think it means something different for everyone that has been part of that process. The biggest thing to me is keeping the feeling of friendship and family that we fostered for all those years and staying there for each other as well as trying to continue that experience for anyone else has joined in this new chapter. Although I will say it can be tricky thing deciding what aspects we want to perpetuate while simultaneously distinguishing ourselves. What’s most interesting – and challenging – is growing into and accepting different or expanded roles we were not quite in before. I am continually surprised and impressed by how all the current band members expand their roles and skills in this new dynamic. Most of all we’re just happy to continue doing this together after all this time.

BL: Shira and Sammi, how do you find your chemistry as singers and performers when you share the spotlight together?

Sammi: I absolutely love it. Shira is my sister, and getting to share the stage with her is such a blast! Our chemistry comes so naturally, we’ve spent a lot of time playing music and traveling the world together so we know each other very well. It’s also so empowering having two women fronting this powerhouse of a band. It makes the whole experience even more fun, and I feel lucky every night we get to do it together.

Shira: It’s really a natural chemistry that has developed over the last decade of performing and touring together. We know each other so well, on stage and off that we are so comfortable up there with one another. I’ve spent more time with Sammi than most members of my family at this point.

BL: Your sound pulls from funk, house, and R&B but feels uniquely your own. What’s the creative spark behind how a song comes together?

Shira: The process and inspiration really varies from song to song. Each track we’ve created has a different story. Usually one of us will bring something in, whether it’s a melody or a beat, and then everyone sort of comes together and puts their special sauce on it. A true collaboration.

Deion Williams: I think the creative spark is that God created all of us being different and unique! But we’re all able to come together, be honest, and work out ideas/parts without conflict no matter what the genre is. Also we like and love working with each other.

BL: Shira and Sammi, what’s one moment on stage when you felt the power of having each other side-by-side up front?

Sammi: I don’t think there’s one specific moment, it’s really kind of every moment that feels so powerful when we’re up there together. Just sharing that energy side-by-side is magic. I mean… girl power, right?!

BL: What do you hope first-time listeners experience when they see Cool Cool Cool live?

Chris: I hope first-time listeners are able to just let loose and dance. There’s a lot happening on stage during our shows- it’s always fun to watch first-timers realize all the different things the band members are doing!

Miles Livolsi: My hope for first-time listeners of Cool Cool Cool is that they walk away from our shows enjoying and remembering our original music. Our songs have a wide range of styles and I hope that if a particular song doesn’t resonate with someone then at least another song of ours hopefully will. We have a little something for everyone! I enjoy playing our music and I believe that love translates through our performances, you’ll have to come to a show to truly understand what I mean!

Deion: I hope first time listeners when they see Cool Cool Cool live experience, how nice of a band we are, how tight we are as a band, good vibes, the love we show as a band and how much fun we’re having living our dreams of playing music together.

BL: Shira and Sammi, as women fronting a funk/jam band, what do you hope your presence and performance bring to the larger music community?

Sammi: At the end of the day, I just want everyone to feel happy and connected. Music has this beautiful way of bringing people together, and being able to share that with another strong woman by my side is so special. Women are powerful, and when we lift each other up, that joy and energy spreads to the whole community.
