BISS List 6.15.23: Spotlight on Tupac Day (6.24) + Mark Karan’s Buds (6.22) + Best of BISS this Week
Happy Thursday BISS Listers,
Jenni here, filling in one more time for Miss BISS as she recovers from two weeks away at BackCountry Fest & Hog Farm Hideaway.
#LastWeek, Pamela was at Hog Farm Hideaway. You can check out a video of some of the magic from the first of three nights of The String Cheese Incident, and another of strings in the sunshine from Hot Buttered Rum with Jilian Nershi.
Meanwhile, back in the bay, I did so much dancing during two back-to-back sets of Afrolicious @ Boom Boom Room. It was great to see Diamond make it out despite his recent health problems. More info on that and an opportunity to help out here. BISS Calendar Curator extraordinaire Phillip got photos and videos of the night, check it out here.
#ThisWeekend, we’ve got two nights of legends with Miss Diana Ross @ Mountain Winery tonight, and Miss Janet Jackson @ Shoreline on Friday. Also on Friday is Southern Culture on the Skids @ Sweetwater Music Hall (*WIN*). Saturday Lyrics Born @ The Guild Theater and Floratura @ HopMonk Sebastapol (*WIN*). And Sunday Stern Grove Festival kicks off with Snarky Puppy.
#NextWeek Pamela will be back in your inboxes, and Mark Karan’s Buds are back for the first time in five years @ Sweetwater Music Hall on 6/22 (*WIN*). And Tupac Day in Oakland returns on 6/24. More about both in the spotlights below!
But wait, there’s more! This week’s #ListenToThis is “My Favorite Ghost’” by Lyrics Born ft Anjelika Jelly Joseph & Nigel Hall. Be sure to check it out below!

SPOTLIGHT ON BAY AREA HIP HOP FOREVER
2nd Annual Tupac Day
June 24th @ Eastside Arts Alliance
Tupac Shakur Day is a day of poetry readings, inspirational speakers, and live performances to celebrate Tupac Shakur’s life. Join us as we recognize his outstanding work as an Artist, Actor, Activist, Poet & Songwriter with music, food, inspiration, motivation, and laughter.
In 2022, the City of Oakland, in collaboration with Bay Area Hip Hop Forever, recognized Tupac Shakur for his achievements and the legacy that he left behind with an official proclamation that Tupac’s birthday, June 16th, will now be known as the Official Tupac Shakur Day in Oakland, CA.
SPOTLIGHT ON BUDS WHO ROCK
Mark Karan’s Buds
June 22nd @ Sweetwater Music Hall
Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. For the last twelve years, he has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young, and Sophie B. Hawkins.
“Mark Karan’s Buds” features Mark’s soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work melded with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of an array of amazing musicians, who just also happen to be his friends. It all comes together in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk, and whatever else the muse might bring. This time around the “Buds” include Bob Gross on bass, Mookie Siegel and Scott Guberman on keyboards, and Anna Elva on drums.

LISTEN TO THIS
Listen to “My Favorite Ghost (Phantom Pains)” by Lyrics Born ft Anjelika Jelly Joseph & Nigel Hall, from the album Vision Board.
Lyrics Born had this to say, “This is about as psychedelic as I’ve ever been. I’m in a different space. The world is in a different space, and I wanted to celebrate that, loosen up and really create some imagery and share some emotion that I never have.”
You can catch Lyrics Born this Saturday at The Guild Theater in Menlo Park.
