BISS List 12.18.24: Spotlight on LAZWELL (12.28) + Best of BISS this Week
Happy Holidaze BISS Listers!
Hope you’re enjoying the holiday season! To me, this time of year is all about celebrating with family (of all kinds), holiday parties, and spreading love and happiness as we lead up to New Year’s. Let’s make the most of it! Even with the rainy weather setting the mood this week, things have been anything but dull—especially with the 6 a.m. tornado warning we all heard about on our phones! Pretty crazy, especially after having the tsunami warning a couple of weeks ago, and the pretty constant downpour keeping things interesting. Hopefully, everyone is staying safe and dry out there.
The Week in Review: It’s been a busy week trying to catch up with work before the end of the year. I didn’t really make it out much last week, but I know some of you did. For those who know, I lit a candle on Friday night that burned until sundown on Saturday. Thank you all for your kind words—it meant a lot.
I did make it out on Saturday night, for a little bit, and I’m so glad I did. The Boom Boom Room hosted the first of what I hope will be many incredible shows featuring Nate Werth from Snarky Puppy and Ghost-Note called Nate’s Werthless Good Time. He was joined by Peter Knudsen (also from Ghost-Note), Jason Muscat, Max Cowan, Otis McDonald, and John Palowich—and they absolutely brought the funk. This is the first installment of Nate’s Werthless Good Time, and I think we can count on seeing this project back at the Boom Boom Room again soon!
The night began with Daniel Cohen and his band DangerAte, setting the tone for an epic evening. Nate and Otis joined in for the last song of their set, while Daniel returned the favor with a standout sit-in during the main set. It was a great overlap, and here’s hoping we’ll see more collaborations like this in the future. You can check out the links to each set here: DangerAte and Nate’s Werthless Good Time.
Unfortunately, I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather since I woke up on Sunday. So I stayed in Sunday night, but BISS List contributing editor, Gabriel Barkin, caught amazing shots in this photo gallery of Nat Keefe’s Concert Carnival.
I was so bummed to miss Samantha Fish + Cedric Burnside + Jon Spencer at the Fillmore Monday night! I was really looking forward to it, but decided to stay in to avoid getting sick with all the end-of-year festivities coming up. From what I’ve heard, the show was amazing. Thank you to Rick G for representing me at the last minute at the show. Your videos are fantastic!. Additionally, a big thanks to Gabriel Barkin for his incredible review of all three acts and a little insight on the blues, highlighting some of the other badass women out there in this realm, plus a stunning photo gallery. I feel like I was there!
Looking Ahead: The upcoming show calendar is absolutely stacked. You can find this week’s top picks below, and if you’re looking for even more options, check out the rolling Best of BISS shows list on the website and also a chance to win tickets!

BISS REVIEW
Samantha Fish: Shake Em on Down Tour
ft Cedric Burnside & Jon Spencer
“Is it a cliché that any woman who plays ripping electric guitar solos gets called “bad ass”? Perhaps, but I’m going to go there anyway: Samantha Fish is bad ass. You’ll probably see a picture of her in the dictionary if you looked up the word “macho.” Or “sexy.” “Or “beast.” Bill Graham once wrote that he thought Otis Redding, when he took the stage at the Fillmore so many years ago, was dripping with more sexuality than anyone he’d ever seen. Fish might give even a dead man in his grave pause to reconsider. (No disrespect, we miss you, Uncle Bobo!).With Samantha Fish, we’re talking ‘Get the fuck out of my way, I’m here to take what’s mine!’ sensuality, just so we’re clear. (The blues are ironic, remember?)” Check out Gabriel Barkin’s full review & photos of The Fillmore show on Dec 16th.
