#ThisWeekend, we are excited about going to L7 at the UC Theater on Thursday night. Then on Friday, I am torn between Fantastic Negrito at GAMH (*WIN*) or Vinyl at Peri’s to celebrate Lex’s birthday. On Saturday, I would like to travel up to Hopmonk to see Mark Karan’s Buds (*WIN*). For more on this one, check the spotlight below! Then, of course, we end our Saturday night at Boom Boom Room. They have a special treat lined up for us with Mingo Lewis (of Santana) (*WIN*).

SPOTLIGHT ON BEST BUDS
Mark Karan’s Buds
May 6th @ Hopmonk Tavern Novato
Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. For the last twelve years, he has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young, and Sophie B. Hawkins.
“Mark Karan’s Buds” features Mark’s soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work melded with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of an array of amazing musicians, who just also happen to be his friends. It all comes together in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk, and whatever else the muse might bring. This time around the “Buds” include Scott Guberman on keyboards, Anna Elva on drums, and Don Crisp on bass guitar.

LISTEN TO THIS
Listen to “Bruce Cafe” by Eric Lindell. From his latest album Oakland, where Eric melds West Coast rock, swampy Gulf Coast R&B, hard country, and Memphis soul in a hybrid American roots music that, while thoroughly respectful of traditions, blazes a trail of its own.
Eric had this to say about the song, “When I was really down in the dumps and feeling like shit, my buddy Chris told me about this place so I rode my motorcycle out there one morning. Bruce Cafe is about 25 minutes from my house. It is pretty much the only thing in Bruce, Florida.” And it was there he wrote this song.
Friends in California and Nevada, don’t miss your chance to catch Eric Lindell live at BackCountry Festival, June 2-4 at Corley Ranch Nevada.
