BISS List 5.18.23: Spotlight on ALO (8.5 & 8.6) + Lantz Lazwell & The Vibe Tribe + Best of BISS this Week

Happy Spor’s Birthday Week! Let the celebrations of you begin! I am almost rested enough from this past week… Hope to see you all on Friday night for Spor’s Bday with Lantz Lazwell at Boom Boom Room!

It’s good to be back home in the city after an incredible week in Placerville at the inaugural Golden Road Gathering. The lineup was incredible, and the performances were all top-notch. I loved seeing all of my favorite artists perform live, and I also discovered some new bands that I really enjoyed. The atmosphere at the festival was also really great. I love our community of music lovers and I know everyone felt that this was a really special experience.

I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who was involved in making this first year such a success! We could not have achieved this without every single one of you! Thank you ALL for making this year one to remember! Congrats to the producing partners, Adam, Ryan, and Justin on a job well done. #ThisWeek, I will be catching up on all the things I missed ASAP so that we can get out there this weekend to celebrate Mr. Spor properly starting on his actual birthday, Friday, May 19th. Dinner in the Fillmore hood around 8p followed by a fabulous night of funk at the Boom Boom Room with Lantz Lazwell & The Vibe Tribe with Superblume opening (*WIN*). Show starts at 9:15 and goes until 2:30a. #OnSaturday, I got us tickets to see one of his all-time favorite bands, The Damned, playing at The Regency (*WIN*). #ThenOnSunday, we round out the birthday weekend with Love & Rockets at The Fox in Oakland. SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC IN THE EAST BAY HILLS

Paper Moon Presents: ALO

August 5th & 6th @ Bruns Amphitheater

Paper Moon Presents returns to the beautiful Cal Shakes/Bruns Amphitheater with two ALO shows. These shows are always something truly special – there’s no more magical setting than this, among the redwoods and eucalyptus in the Berkeley Hills. Enjoy a spectacular show under the stars on Saturday 8/5, or music in the sun at the matinee show on Sunday 8/6. Or get a two-day pass and come for both!!

ALO call their music “jam-pop,” and the description is apt – meticulously-crafted/accessibly-hooky compositions laced with improvisational departures, in which the band melds into a single organism in voice and consciousness. They’re always exploring, but never wandering. There is always intention, momentum, and a patience and confidence that can only be wrought from a quarter century of collaboration and water under the bridge.

Lantz Lazwell & The Vibe Tribe are back at the Boom Boom Room, and this time they’re joined by Jesse Jennings of The Higgs. And did we mention it’s also Spor’s birthday!? Come celebrate with the BISS crew!! Going late – to 2am and beyond.

Slaying reinvented covers and owning instantly lovable originals, Lantz Lazwell & The Vibe Tribe will leave jaws agape while keeping the dance floor humming. Lantz has also shared the stage w/ such greats as George Clinton, Bernie Worrel (Talking Heads), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Angelo Moore and Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), and the Neville Brothers.

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “Black Man” by DJ Williams, the leading single from his highly anticipated forthcoming studio album, Soldier of Love – set for release on June 29th. On the track, guitarist, singer, and songwriter DJ Williams delivers a soul-stirring musical manifesto that delves deep.

I asked DJ to tell me a little bit about this song and he said, “I’m super excited for the release of this new music which I believe showcases the evolution of my art. ‘Black Man’ explores the complicated & conflicting layers of the Black male existence in America. A lot of this record is super honest and about my own life and the people in it.”

DJ was just recently in the Bay Area both with his own project as well as with Karl Denson but he will be back this way soon! And keep an eye out for the release of title track “Soldier of Love,” which showcases DJ’s admiration of Curtis Mayfield, featuring Kanika Moore, DJ Harrison, & Adam Deitch – coming on May 30th.
