BISS List 7.20.23: Spotlight on ALO at the Bruns (8.5 & 8.6) + Best of BISS this Week
Happy Week of Recovery from Dead All Day and Night!!
#WhatAWeekItWas, starting on Tuesday, I kicked off the week of Dead All Day and Night with this excellent photo exhibit at Haight Street Art Center, Between The Dark And Light, Grateful Dead 1965-1995 (runs through Sept 3rd). Many of the photos are rare or never published by some of the most well-known and talented photographers including Jay Blakesberg, who also curated the exhibit. Only caught a few pics… **Thank you to the street team volunteers who helped put out these handbills with three different Stanley Mouse designs on the back. They went like hotcakes on Shakedown!
Thursday night, It was an honor and a pleasure to help facilitate the reception for the opening of Mickey Hart’s pop-up art gallery. Very cool to hear him talk with Bill Walton about the process of it all. See for yourself!
Friday was a magical day all around… I caught a ride with my neighbor who had secret squirrel parking right near Pier 48 aka Shakedown Street where we wandered through, seeing friends all along the way. Followed by a wondrous ushering to an entrance with no line. Next thing you know we were in our seats with an amazing view for an amazing show! Check it. Despite being some of the last out of the stadium, we were some of the first ones to arrive at Boom Boom Room for SF is Dead Allstars featuring Reed Mathis, Matt Hartle, Ezra Lipp, Jordan Feinstein, Murph + Special guest: Rich Egan.. Check it
Saturday, I was sitting on my couch and heard familiar guitar sounds coming in through my window… It was Mark Karan sound checking with Scott Guberman and Reed Mathis. (Didn’t I just see that guy at 3am at BBR?) They jammed for a few hours outside of Love on Haight, right below my window. I love living in this hood! Check it. I didn’t go to the Dead show Saturday night cause, why push to top the epicness of Friday? (Let it flow, right?) However, I did go to Boom Boom Room to catch the end of the Oakadelic set and then both of the Tracorum sets. They played all the good stuff I want to hear from Tracorum that kept me dancing for two long sets including my long time favorite, Magdalena. Check it.
Sunday, I went and helped out for a few hours at Love on Haight cause just like all week long, it was “banana pants” in there. (Sunny’s words). It’s fun to work in a store full of rainbows. Then I got a call from the same friends who hooked me up with a great ticket on Friday. And you know what they say, “Never miss a Sunday Show”. I still hear the crowd in my head, walking out of the stadium, clapping the Bo Diddley beat… Clap clap, clap-clap, clap… “Our love is real, not fade away.. .” Check it. Sunday didn’t end there, next was The Foundry for Matt Hartle And Friends with Sofranko, Anna Elva, Jen Rund and Jordan Feinstein + DJ Little John. THEN…After this entirely full week of epicness, I hopped in the car with Jordan and we booked it over to Great American Music Hall and caught the end of the Sam Grisman Project
Truly an all around amazing week of friends and live music!
#Tonight/Thursday, I have some sleep to catch up on but that will have to be after tonight. I am sure you must have heard by now that the Disco Biscuits are at the Fillmore. Congrats to our winners Liza and Evan! Then the afterparty will be going off at Boom Boom Room Presents with Thievery Corporation’s Jeff Franca as he showcases his new electronic project… ETHNO.

LISTEN TO THIS
Listen to “Together” by Afrolicious and Joe McGuire (Pleazure) from their recent release, That’s Right.
I spoke with Joe McGuire and he told me that “Together is the method Afrolicious has always used to create a great vibe from the weekly party back in the day to all the live performances and original compositions. The understanding that we have a common and shared interest in what happens in this world, and we can uplift to a heavy groove, soulful beat, dance party. We can make life funky, joyous and be aware of what’s going on in this world!”
Joe and the rest of the Afrolicious gang will be in full effect with a benefit show for Diamond Vibes on August 10th at Rickshaw Stop. The Afrolicious Party Reunion includes a live set from Afrolicious + DJ sets from Zebuel (of Smoked Out Soul), Will Magid (of Balkan Bump), and Izzy Wize + more special guests.
