Now turn off your phone and go get amongst it!
#StayingInTheBay? Lemme first comment on this past weekend and then we can get into this weekend around the Bay…
#LastWeekend, I had a wonderful weekend up in wine country finishing out my fantastic 10-day birthday celebration. I was thrilled to participate in a successful fundraising event for the Macayamas Fire Department with BEW productions on Saturday. Theresa, you are awesome and so is your team! Then I journeyed to Napa to finish out the Widespread Panic run with my crew. I heard from everyone that the whole Panic weekend was epic, especially Friday night. I can only speak to Sunday since that’s the show I went to and it was excellent! I was very busy having fun and dancing and seeing friends, but I still thought of you and made sure that I captured some of the show.
#ThisWeek, on Wednesday, at Peri’s, it’s Waffles on Sunday ft members of Hot Buttered Rum (yes the show is Wednesday). On Thursday, in the city, John Zorn is playing two shows at Great American Music Hall with Bill Frisell and Laurie Anderson. Then on Friday, Moonalice is at the Chapel (*WIN*), then Atta Kid is playing late at the Boom Boom Room (*WIN*).
#ThisSaturday, 9/2, we’re having a single release party at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley to celebrate LAZWELL’s new single, “Killing It.” We’ve got special guests Jordan Feinstein and Noelle Glory joining in, and Marshall House Project is co-headlining. (*WIN*) It’s gonna be a doubleheader of funk and soul! If you haven’t heard “Killing It” ft George Clinton yet, check it out now! And for more in-depth info on LAZWELL and their frontman, Lantz Lazwell, read this interview with Lantz by BISS List Contributing Editor Josh Danson from a few weeks ago.
#NextWeek, Mare Island Dock of the Bay Fest is back on September 9th & 10th and you can enter to #WinTickets just by spreading the word! September 9th is Old School Funk Fest featuring Morris Day and The Time, Confunkshun, Average White Band, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood (*WIN*). September 10 is Spectacular Soul Fest featuring The California Honeydrops, Fantastic Negrito, Monophonics, and The Altons (*WIN*)
#MarkYourCalendar for Stephen Marley – Old Soul Unplugged at the Fillmore on 9/21 (*WIN*)!

LISTEN TO THIS
Listen to “Second Son”, the latest single from Honey Island Swamp Band from Custom Deluxe which is dropping on October 27. Featuring vocalists Adryon de Leon & Shira Elias, guitarists Lucas de Mulder & Eddie Roberts, drummer Michelangelo Carruba, and Charles Mertens on bass.
With a slick throwback feel that feels like a 70s action flick, the song was written in collaboration between vocalist/guitarist Aaron Wilkinson and keyboardist Chris Spies during a 2-day session. While Aaron is the second son of a second son and the song is autobiographical in that sense, he tends to approach songwriting writing about characters as opposed to the author’s experiences. In this case, he is envisioning a character who is a vagabond living hard and road-weary. We spoke with Chris and he told us, “When Aaron and I went into the studio with Mikey and Charles, we didn’t know what this snowy 2-day session was going to become. The vibe of the Color Red house is really something special. You never know who might be there and who might end up playing on your track or vice versa. It just so happened that Lucas & Eddie were both there at the same time recording music of their own and next thing you know they were playing dual rhythm guitar on this track. Then we sent the track to Adryon and Shira and worked on it together remotely.”
New Orleans Friends!! Mark your calendars for the record release party on October 28th at The Maple Leaf. Eddie Roberts & The Lucky Strokes are opening which of course means that Eddie will sit in with them just like he did at Jazz Fest.
Bay Area Friends!! You can catch Honey Island Swamp Band at the first Sugar Pine Music Festival (formerly known as Hangtown Music Festival), October 19th-22nd at Nevada County Fairgrounds – and you can *Win Tickets* from BISS!
