BISS List 3.20.25 Spotlight on Béla Fleck Trio (3.29 & 3.30) + Best of BISS this Week

Happy Spring Equinox, BISS Listers!

The days are getting longer, the music is getting louder, and festival season is just around the corner. Don’t forget, if your internal clock still feels off, blame Daylight Saving Time. We might have lost an hour of sleep, but we gained more daylight for dancing—so let’s make the most of it!

This week’s BISS List is coming at you after another much-needed recovery period. After over a week of battling the flu, I finally made it back out for some live music, and it felt so good. I started with a packed Thursday night and had to make the tough call to sit out the rest of the weekend to fully recover. But I’ve got plenty of videos to share, and I’m already looking forward to what’s coming up this week!

Last Week’s Shows:

  • Tues 3/12: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings at The Masonic – I couldn’t make it to this one, but Princess Tamara sent over some clips, and told me that it was a night of pure musical magic. If anyone else was there, let me know how it was! Check out the videos.
  • Thurs 3/13: The Motet & Polyrhythmics at The Independent – Finally back out after being sick, and what a way to return! The Motet and Polyrhythmics absolutely delivered, with deep funk grooves and tight musicianship that made it impossible to stand still. This was one of those sets where every song felt like a highlight. Check out the videos.
  • Thurs 3/13 (Late Night): Toubab Krewe at Boom Boom Room – After the high-energy funk at The Indy, I couldn’t just go home. So off to Boom Boom Room I went for a late-night set with Toubab Krewe. Their signature West African-influenced jams kept the room moving well into the night, proving once again why Boom Boom Room is the place to be for late-night magic. Check out the videos.
  • Fri 3/14: Ronkat’s Katdelic at Boom Boom Room – I had every intention of making it out for this one, but the smart move was to stay in and rest up. Luckily, Gina came through with videos so we can still get a taste of that funk-fueled Katdelic energy! Check out the videos.
  • Sat 3/15: Recovery mode – No FOMO (Rule of BISS!), just resting up for another packed week ahead. Sometimes you gotta hit pause to be ready for the next play.
  • Sun 3/16: One more HBD to LC! I’m bummed to have missed her birthday celebration in Mill Valley, but I heard it was good times! Also, I know Pigeons Playing Ping Pong at The Regency was a blast. If anyone has videos from either, send them my way!

This Week’s Shows: There are tons of great shows happening all over the Bay Area and beyond, and we’ve captured a lot of them in the Best of BISS section, which you will find when you scroll down. But here’s what’s on my personal calendar this week…

  • Thurs 3/20: Jump Up! ft DJ Kevvy Kev & The D3 at Boom Boom Room – No cover, great vibes. I hope to have my energy back to make it out for this one!
  • Fri 3/21: Nate’s Werthless Good Time at Boom Boom Room (*WIN*) – Nate Werth from Snarky Puppy and Ghost-Note is back for the third installment of his residency, and this one’s extra special as we celebrate Otis McDonald’s birthday! Expect another wild night with plenty of special guests, including Gala Celia, an incredible percussionist from Argentina. Plus, Lantz Lazwell will be sitting in on a couple of songs to keep the grooves flowing. Who else might take the stage? You’ll have to show up to find out!
  • Sat 3/22: The Wood Brothers at The Fillmore (*WIN*) – Huge response for ticket entries! Last chance to enter, winner will be notified later today! Also, in advance of this show, I want to highlight a special feature.
  • Sat 3/22 (Late Night): Super Greens at Boom Boom Room (*WIN*) – If I’m still feeling good after The Wood Brothers, I’ll probably head over to Boom Boom Room for this one too!

This week, we’ve also got an interview with Chris Wood of The Wood Brothers from BISS contributing editor Josh Danson. Josh originally interviewed Chris Wood back in 2015, and now, ten years later, we’ve got an update. Every time, I’m amazed at how much homework Josh does before these interviews and how he manages to pull such great insights from the artists. It’s always a treat to read, and this one is no exception. Now I’m even more excited for the show this Saturday!

Also, don’t forget to check out the updated BISS Listers Photo Album for new shots from last week’s shows. If you have any great photos or videos from recent shows, send them my way and I’ll add them in!

For even more shows and your chance to win FREE tickets, check out Best of BISS, the Full BISS Calendar, and the Win Tickets page.

That’s the scoop for this week, BISS Listers. If I missed anything, let me know. My inbox is always available, unlike my self-control when there’s good music involved. I’ll see you out there, probably running on caffeine and groove alone, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Keep it funky, keep it loud, and keep supporting live music.

Much love and endless jams,

~ Pamela aka Miss BISS

BISS INTERVIEW

Interview with Chris Wood

We last spoke with Chris Wood, the renowned bass virtuoso who first found fame as a member of Medeski, Martin & Wood and then as a founding member of The Wood Brothers, almost exactly ten years ago. A lot has changed for Chris in the intervening years – a global pandemic, getting married, surviving a tornado in Tennessee only to end up living in Canada. But one thing hasn’t changed, Chris and The Wood Brothers’ commitment to playing and recording authentic music that speaks to matters of the heart while striving for peace of mind. Check out the full interview from BISS contributing editor Josh Danson.
