BISS List 9.6.23: Spotlight on Stephen Marley Unplugged (9.21) + Best of BISS this Week

Happy End of Summer folks!

Welcome home playa friends! By now you have gotten your service back online and you are receiving tons of texts to check on your well-being. I have no doubts that the news reports were greatly skewed on the negative side out here in the default world. But I know you, you were all prepared. And for those who weren’t as prepared, you were taken care of by those who had extra to give. I know it was a rough one this year, but I also know you went in planning to exercise the 10 principles of burning man. This year pushed hard on radical self-reliance and communal efforts not to mention gifting (both sides) and civic responsibility (and all the others, I am sure). I know you rose to the challenge! Then again, isn’t that what it’s all about? If you know, then you know. Still I say, well done. 👏🏼👏🏼

Personally, I am quite proud of my friend Lantz Lazwell who went out there with the plan to play at Reverbia last week on Wednesday and Thursday (x2) and stuck with the plan to be out on Friday to get back to the world and play on Saturday night at Sweetwater. It started to rain just as he hit the pavement to head home. Everyone at the show is so glad that you made it out and back in time!

#ThisPast Saturday, LAZWELL & Marshall House Project killed it at the Sweetwater! The room was pretty packed and the crowd was getting down for both sets. Thank you to all who came out to support, and moreover, you’re welcome! What a great night! If you missed it, you can check out some photos and videos here.

#ThisWeekend, I think we should organize a BISS crew out to Mare Island for the Dock of the Bay Fest. There are two full days of music to enjoy. Saturday (9/9), day 1, is the Old School Funk Fest (*WIN*) featuring Morris Day and the Time, Con Funk Shun, Average White Band, & Cold Blood. Sunday (9/10), day 2, is the Spectacular Soul Fest (*WIN*) featuring The California Honeydrops, Fantastic Negrito, Monophonics, & The Altons. Shall we carpool? Or maybe Ferry from the city? If you are thinking about it, reply back, and let’s make a plan!

#SacValleyFriends – #MarkYourCalendar for the grand reopening of Lost on Main on Sept 16th with Scott Pemberton’s O’Theory (*WIN*)! Everyone knows that Lost on Main was downtown Chico’s premiere music venue for so many years. And it’s about to be again! Karin told me: “Covid gave us a taste of retirement and we realized we couldn’t live without the music. So we leveled up and completely remodeled the entire venue! We even added a reserved second balcony so that you can really level up!” They have some great shows lined up for you to follow and we have them listed here on BISS for you.

Stephen Marley – Old Soul Unplugged

“Anything that sounds good is good,” says Stephen Marley, paraphrasing Duke Ellington. Never one to limit his musical horizons, Stephen has always listened without prejudice, letting his inspiration set him free as a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. Written through nightly jam sessions on a remote family farm in the Florida countryside, Old Soul encompasses everything from original compositions and reggae rarities to classics by Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and The Beatles that are loaded with personal meaning.

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski said this about the song, “I was camping on these cliffs overlooking the ocean when I picked up my guitar and the first thing I played was this lick and then a song just started immediately coming out. Later, I played it for our sax player Johnny and he said it needed a bridge and had some ideas for the story of a guy that’s been getting beaten down by the daily grind and needs some lovin’ at the end of the day. I just kind of ran with that idea.”
