BISS List 9.13.23: Spotlight on Bay Phil Presents: Broadway’s Best (10.1) + Best of BISS this Week

Happy New Year to you BISS Listers celebrating the Jewish New Year this week. Or as we say, Shana Tova (“a good year”)!! This isn’t limited to just those celebrating, I wish you ALL a sweet and good year!

#LastWeekend, The Mare Island Dock of the Bay festival was a huge success, with perfect weather for an outdoor event on the bay. The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing, and the temperature was perfect. There was something for everyone at the festival, with food, music, & dancing. Saturday – Day 1, was truly old school with Morris Day & The Time, Confunktion, Average White Band, & The Seatruck Brothers which you can check out right here. Sunday – Day 2, featured many BISS faves including California Honeydrops, Fantastic Negrito, and Monophonics. It was great to see so many of you out there for this, but I know some of you missed it, so here ya go.

#ThisWeekend, there are a couple of great music festivals running from the 15th through the 17th that are just a hop skip, and a jump (down or up) the way. Camp Deep End is always a good time. How could it not be with the likes of Lebo & Friends, Hot Buttered Rum, Eddie Roberts & Friends, Mikaela Davis, Eggy, & Marshall House Project. Then heading in the other direction to the south is the Santa Cruz Mountain Sol Festival featuring Ben Harper & Innocent Criminals, Jewel, Railroad Earth, Nth Power presents Earth, Wind & Power, Wreckless Strangers, and lots more over 3 days!

#SacValleyFriends – #ThisWeek #InChico! We here at BISS were delighted to hear from so many of you about your excitement for the grand reopening of Lost on Main on September 16th with Scott Pemberton’s O’Theory (*WIN*)! #ICYMI Everyone knows that Lost on Main was downtown Chico’s premiere music venue for so many years. And it’s about to be again! Karin told me: “Covid gave us a taste of retirement and we realized we couldn’t live without the music. So we leveled up and completely remodeled the entire venue. We even added a reserved second balcony so that you can really level up!” They have some great shows lined up for you to follow and we have them listed here on BISS for you.

#NextWeek, we kick the weekend off early with DJ Williams at Madrone on Weds, 9/20. I asked DJ how it feels to be touring with his own band and his thoughts on coming to SF. He told me, “I am super excited about this tour as we’ll be doing a bunch of stuff off my newly released album Soldier Of Love and the band with me is absolutely incredible! Can’t wait to dance with you all!” #ICYMI, we featured his song, “Black Man” from this album in our weekly #ListenToThis earlier this year: https://spoti.fi/3IlYft6. The week will continue with Stephen Marley – Old Soul Unplugged at the Fillmore on Thursday, 9/21 (*WIN*); then NOLA for the weekend with Galactic at The Guild on Friday, 9/22 and then NAPA to NOLA on Saturday 9/23 with Galactic,  Dumpstaphunk, Raw Oyster Cult (members of the Radiators), Cyril Neville, MJ’s Brass Boppers, plus DJ Harry Duncan at Meritage in Napa.

#MarkYourCalendar for September 28th for Toward The FUN(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. Steve Earle returns to historic Herbst Theatre to host an intimate songwriters circle with Rickie Lee Jones, Peter Rowan, John Craigie, and special guests to gather in support of Camp Winnarainbow—a circus & performing arts haven for young people. founded in 1975 by hippie icons Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney. The show will be opened by Camp Winnarainbow alums, Sour Widows Duo, fresh from their Outside Lands and SXSW debuts.

As always, check out the Best of BISS section and Win Tickets page. And don’t forget there is always more on the Full Calendar.

But wait, there’s more! This week’s #ListenToThis is “Carnival Time’” from Irma Thomas, Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., and The New Breed Brass Band. Be sure to check it out below.

LISTEN TO THIS

Listen to “Carnival Time” from Irma Thomas, Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., and The New Breed Brass Band. (Released 2022)

This track dotted with New Orleans stars appears on the soundtrack for Take Me to The River: New Orleans, a documentary celebrating the rich musical history, heritage, legacy, and influence of New Orleans and Louisiana. Director Martin Shore had this to say about the song: “‘Carnival Time’ was the perfect combination of New Orleans’ musical royalty, with a contagious performance by The New Breed Brass Band. The song is a whole party in itself.”

You can catch Irma Thomas later this month at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.

Why should you “Listen to This”? – BISS (Because I Said So). Check out the complete Spotify playlist with all weekly songs! #moretocome
