BISS List 9.18.24: Spotlight on Portugal. The Man (Free Show) + Best of BISS this Week

What’s up, BISS Crew?!

The weekend may still be a few days away, but who says we can’t start the party early tonight? But first, let’s dive into last week’s highlights because, wow, was it packed with incredible music! And as always, I’d love to hear about your adventures too. Here’s what last week looked like for me…

Thursday: It was fantastic seeing so many of you at the Boom Boom Room for Cool Cool Cool! I’ve caught a few of their shorter sets since they reformed as this current project (from Turkuaz to Remain In Light to Cool Cool Cool), but this was the first time for a full show. And the first time at the BBR! And let me tell you… next level! They came out swinging from the start, and by song two, it felt like a Saturday night. And everyone in the room would agree including the band! Enjoy my video and photo album here. #yourewelcome

Saturday: We started in the afternoon at a friend’s house for an epic end-of-summer party before heading over to the UC Theatre for Oteil Burbridge. What a show! The venue was stellar, and the lineup? Chef’s kiss. We had the father-son Kimmocks on guitar and drums, and Jason Crosby filling in for Melvin. We missed Melvin, but Jason absolutely crushed it with that fiddle in addition to the keys. Also, can we talk about that epic mashup? Would you call it “Smells Like Friend of the Devil” or “Friend of Teen Spirit“? Don’t miss the full photo & video album here. After that show ended, it was a quick dash back to the city to catch Marcus Rezak Band at the Boom Boom Room. Phish + Dead + his own tunes? Yes, please! That man can shred! Take a look at my photo & video album here.

Sunday: We rolled out of bed and right into the 45th Annual Haight Ashbury Street Fair. Always a joy to see so many familiar faces there! If you haven’t been, the event spans across five blocks with two main stages: one at Masonic and Haight, and the other at Stanyan and Haight. In between, there is a kid’s alley with fun stuff and a stage, a skateboard alley, a DJ alley, and tons of vendors. Spor and I decided to divide and conquer. He headed to catch Sgt. Splendor and Frightwig, while I held it down at the Keystone Revisited & Moonalice’s sets. Got lots of photos and videos between the two of us, so check out the fun right here.

Now, let’s talk about this week! I’m hustling to get this BISS List out to you right now because tonight, I’m off to the Concert for Kids in VIP style at the ballpark as part of Dreamforce featuring P!nk and Imagine Dragons. If only I could be in two places at once, I’d also hit up Geese at The Indy – so if you’re going, keep me posted! Meanwhile, up in Santa Rosa, Tom Freund is playing at the Lost Church which would be another good choice for tonight. Thursday, I am all about Vulfpeck at the UC Theatre. I am hitting up the 10:30pm show – yes, there are six shows over three days! Of course, I’ll be back at the Boom Boom Room after for DangerAte. + Just added at Longboard in Pacifica! Dead On The Coast with Grateful Dub + Roots of Creation (*WIN*)

Friday: Civic Center is hosting a free show with Portugal. The Man! Should be fun, right? Thank you, Another Planet! More info in the spotlight below.

Saturday: I am thinking of hitting Shoreline for Anderson .Paak. Does anyone wanna go with me from the city? I am still on the fence since I also have plans for Sunday (and apparently can’t run as hard as I used to). Thank goodness we have a whole community to keep up with it collectively!

Sunday: Good news – you don’t have to choose between Tom Freund and Nikka Costa’s shows! Tom’s show at the Art House in Berkeley starts early at 5pm, and Nikka Costa won’t hit the stage at Cornerstone in Berkeley until 8pm. So, you can catch both if you’re up for a doubleheader! I know I am.

That barely scratches the surface of what I wish I could see this week. I would also love to see Paul Weller, Lucinda Williams, Booker T. Jones, and Mother Hips. Hopefully, at least one of you will have it covered. The full rundown of this week’s picks are in the Best of BISS section below. So scroll on!

Upcoming: Mark your calendars for the weekend of October 4th through October 6th for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park! And the music doesn’t have to stop there. On Saturday, October 5th, head to the Boom Boom Room for LAZWELL performing with DangerAte (*WIN*). It’s going to be a nonstop music weekend!
