BISS List 9.11.24: Spotlight on The Future of BISS + Best of BISS this Week

Happy Halfway-to-the-Weekend, BISS Listers!

Another awesome week for live music in the SF Bay and Beyond! Thank you for letting us know what you have been up to. Let’s dive into some of your favorite shows and reviews from last week! Sound Summit was a big hit, with multiple mentions of Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, and other standout artists. Black Uhuru also sold out a show that fans raved about. Other notable mentions include Trombone Shorty in Napa, The Osees at The Chapel, Train and REO Speedwagon at Shoreline, Thievery Corporation’s block party, and The Polyphonic Spree at The Chapel, whose epic orchestral choir sound blows me away every time.

Speaking of Sound Summit, head over to the BISS List gallery to see BISS List Staff Photographer Gabriel Barkin’s captures of the show! His superhighlight? “Grace Bowers and the Hodge Podge—Grace is a world-class blues player, and her singer Acey is brilliant. Keep an eye on that band!”

Google Calendar Update: For those of you who subscribe to the BISS Google calendar, some of you may have noticed extra email notifications from the BISS Google Calendar due to a recent Google update. Unfortunately, we can’t fix this on our end, but you can turn off notifications in your settings by following these steps:

1) Find the BISS calendar in your “Other Calendars,” 2) go to settings, and 3) under Notifications, 4) change “New events” to “None” instead of “Email.” Full instructions here.

The Future of BISS List. We’ve been hinting at some exciting changes, and I’m so thrilled to announce the launch of our BISS List Patreon Page! SPOTLIGHT ON THE FUTURE OF BISS

BISS List Membership

The BISS List is growing and changing! We’ve got plans to expand and become a non-profit. The BISS list as you know it will continue to to come free to your inbox every week. However, we’re asking you to come along on this journey with us by becoming a Patreon member, and as a thank you’ll get some awesome perks like Instant Win contests. This week’s spotlight is a longer one because we have a lot to share with you!

The BISS List began with my deep love for live music and a desire to connect with others who shared that passion. What started as a personal email list of show recommendations has grown into a weekly newsletter with a curated calendar and ticket contests. We’ve become the Bay Area & Beyond’s go-to for funk, jam, soul, and groove, fostering a community to discover new artists and share our passion for live music.

Many people don’t realize how expensive it is to run the BISS List. It costs thousands of dollars a month. The goal of this Patreon page is to make the BISS List sustainable, so we can focus on delivering more of the content you love without the constant pressure of covering our costs.

Here’s a breakdown of our average monthly costs:

  • Social Media Maven: $1000
  • Content Manager: $500
  • Accounting and Business Costs: $450
  • Technology (Mailchimp, Online Storage, Web Hosting etc): $750

That’s right—it costs $2700 to keep the basics of BISS List running every month!

In addition to these monthly costs, the BISS List has thrived on volunteer labor. For over 20 years, I’ve dedicated countless hours each week without taking any payment for myself. It’s truly been a labor of love. Bo helped for many years, followed by Phillip, who also worked gratis out of love for the music and our community.

As a member, you’ll not only get exclusive perks, you will also be allowing us to keep the music playing while we invest more time and resources into the following:

  • Add new features and artist access to BISS
  • Expand our artist support services
  • Produce BISS merchandise
  • Provide compensation for my time
  • Pay and grow my support team
  • Expand to more cities
  • Apply for 501c3 status

501c3 status? That’s right, we want to make BISS a nonprofit. I’ve always been passionate about supporting musicians, and my work with the BISS List has been such a fulfilling part of that. As a nonprofit, we will be able to further support artists through tax-deductible donations, providing resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

MEMBER PERKS: Our thanks for your support!

  • Instant Wins: No more waiting until the week of the show to see if you’ve won. Member-only contests go straight to your inbox, and the first entry wins!
  • Dance Card Filler: Last-minute instant wins to fill your musical calendar
  • Exclusive Giveaways: Reserved just for our members, increase your chances to win
  • Pamela +1s: See a show with Miss BISS herself
  • Your name on the BISS List Wall of Thanks (you can also remain anonymous if you wish)
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re helping keep bisslist.com up and running!

Over the years, the BISS List has evolved into much more than just a list. It’s become a hub where music lovers can connect, support artists, and create lasting memories through our shared experiences. This is just the beginning of the next phase of the BISS List as we continue to evolve, and we hope you will join us on this exciting adventure!!
