BISS List 9.20.23: Spotlight on Camp Winnarainbow Benefit (9.28) + Best of BISS this Week

#This PastSunday, we got to enjoy the 44th annual Haight Ashbury Street Fair which took place in the Upper Haight with stages at Masonic, where we saw San Geronimo, and at Stanyan where we caught some of the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop Celebration. We walked from one end to the other stopping at the skateboard alley to see some tricks. Then we caught the kids from the San Francisco Rock Project at the Kids Alley. Then Spor went up on the roof to watch The Boneless Ones keeping the crowd moshing to the end. Here’s a little taste of the day for you.

#ThisWeek… I am kicking off the weekend early with DJ Williams at Madrone Art Bar tonight, Weds, 9/20 (*WIN*). I checked in with DJ and asked how he feels about touring with his own band, and if he is as stoked to be coming to SF as we are to have him…. He told me, “I am super excited about this tour as we’ll be doing a bunch of stuff off my newly released album Soldier Of Love. The band with me is absolutely incredible! Can’t wait to dance with you all!” #ICYMI, we featured his song, “Black Man” from this new album in our weekly #ListenToThis on May 18th: https://spoti.fi/3IlYft6.

#AndThen… Thursday, 9/21: Stephen Marley is bringing his Old Soul Unplugged Tour (*WIN*) to The Fillmore. Friday & Saturday, we get NOLA two ways! #1) On the Peninsula, Friday, 9/22, Galactic ft Anjelika Jelly Joseph is at The Guild Theatre in San Mateo, then #2) On Saturday, 9/23, in Napa during the daytime and into the evening, it’s the return of *Daytime: Saturday 9/23: NAPA/NOLA: A Day of New Orleans Music and Food with Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Raw Oyster Cult (members of the Radiators), Cyril Neville, MJ’s Brass Boppers, plus DJ Harry Duncan at Blue Note Napa at Meritage (*WIN*). Then, I am hoping🤞that I can make it back to the city after that for Katdelic ft RonKat at Boom Boom Room (*WIN*). You know it will go late-night at BBR, so this can absolutely happen… Then Sunday, 9/24, The Avett Brothers at Frost Amphitheater (*WIN*). And of course, as always, I can not list nor attend every good show as hard as I try – so we have the Best of BISS section and Win Tickets page full of shows for you. Not to mention that there is always more on the Full Calendar.

#NextWeekend, as happens every year, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is bringing fabulous musicians to the Bay. With that, we get all kinds of shows in addition to the plethora of sets at Golden Gate Park on that weekend. Here are just a few to note! #1, Thursday 9/28, you’ll get Steve Earle, Rickie Lee Jones, Peter Rowan, and John Craigie – all in one night to support a great cause with Toward The FUN(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow (More info in the Spotlight below). #2, Saturday 9/30, you’ll get a little more of the Hardly Strictly side with Bambino and Say She She at The Fillmore (*WIN*).

SPOTLIGHT ON CAMP WINNARAINBOW

Toward the FUN(ds): Songwriters Circle with Steve Earle,
Rickie Lee Jones, Peter Rowan, John Craigie, and more

Sept 28th @ Herbst Theatre

Steve Earle returns to historic Herbst Theatre to host an intimate songwriters circle with Rickie Lee Jones, Peter Rowan, John Craigie, and special guests to gather in support of Camp Winnarainbow—a circus & performing arts haven for young people. founded in 1975 by hippie icons Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney. The show will be opened by Camp Winnarainbow alums, Sour Widows Duo, fresh from their Outside Lands and SXSW debuts.

For over 40 years, kids, teens, and adults have run away to join the circus at Camp Winnarainbow in beautiful Mendocino County. Campers choose from activities including trapeze, juggling, clowning, unicycling, songwriting, and more. Camp Winnarainbow has a remarkable scholarship program, making it a haven for economically disadvantaged kids and kids of rockstars alike.

Listen to “Ready for Me” from Galactic ft Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph and Cimafunk, from their EP Tchompitoulas. (Released 2023)

I spoke with co-founder and bassist Robert Mercurio and he told me, “In the true collaborative spirit of Galactic, we approached this EP as a way to connect with some of our new favorite singers and rappers including our new(ish) singer Anjelika ‘Jelly’ Joseph. ‘Ready for Me’ holds a special place in my heart because it was our first collaboration with Cuba superstar Cimafunk and the beginning of a great friendship. After this, we ended up going to Cuba with him and he now lives in New Orleans. We are very much looking forward to continuing our collaborations with Cimafunk – he is a force of funk!”

You can catch Galactic this Saturday 9/23 at NAPA/NOLA: A Day of New Orleans Music & Food at Blue Note Summer Sessions (*WIN*), and the night before 9/22 at The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park.
