BISS List 11.5.26 Spotlight on Jayski and the Dawn + The Best of BISS This Week and More

Happy National Love Your Red Hair Day BISS Listers! I may not be a natural redhead, as the magenta brilliance of my head probably gives away, but I’m taking this opportunity to celebrate me. So there! And after last weekend, I have plenty of music to celebrate, too.

Last Week in Review: Six musical stops in three days. Yeah, that’s more like it! I’m sharing the videos on the BISS List YouTube chann, with a playlist for each event so you can catch some of the music and special guest moments for yourself.

  • Thu 10/29: Blues Traveler @ The Guild – A family reunion with friends going back to when my late husband worked with the band. And damn, did they sound GOOD! Tad telling me he still reads BISS after all these years made me smile.
  • Fri 10/30: Lebo’s A Night of the Living Dead @ The Chapel for Claire’s birthday! Holly Bowling, Wally Ingram, Elliott Peck, Steve Adams, and Danny Luehring joined Lebo, plus special guests Bo Carper and Reed Mathis.
  • Fri 10/30: The Humidors @ Boom Boom Room – One of my favorite Bay Area funk bands. So tight, so funky, and I love Tori Roze’s voice!
  • Sat 10/31: Furthur bus send-off down Haight Street, with live music on a flatbed – Scott Guberman, Bella Rayne, Alex Jordan, Emerson Rose, Burt Lewis, and Jerry Saracini supplied the music while I captured it from the roof.
  • Sat 10/31: Galactic @ The Fillmore – bringing the New Orleans funk for Halloween!
  • Sat 10/31: RonKat’s KATDELIC @ Boom Boom Room – Amazing, with special guests including Eric McFadden, Adam Deitch, and Lantz Lazwell!

We also have more from last week with reviews and photo galleries on the website for you to enjoy. Violet Grohl proved the real deal at Rickshaw Stop on Tues 10/27, review from Sean Reiter. On Thu 10/28, The Chicks visited San Francisco on their long way home, review from Gabriel David Barkin. And Gabriel brings us another gallery from Lebo’s Night of the Living Dead at The Chapel on Fri 10/30.

On My Radar: Here’s where you’ll find me this week. Tonight I’m heading to GLIDE’s Holiday Jam ft Patti LaBelle at The Warfield (*WIN*). An incredible voice for a great cause, supporting GLIDE’s meals, family services, health access, and work helping people out of poverty and crisis. I’m excited to hear Destani Wolf too! Friday I’m planning to get to Boom Boom Room early for Free Moment ft Sunshine Becker, followed by Koobi Fora (*WIN*). Check out the Spotlight below for more on this! Then Saturday it’s Karina Rykman at The Independent (*WIN*). Always a good show, and I’m excited for this one! Check out the Hot List for more of our top picks of the week.

Looking ahead, make sure to mark your calendar for Jay Lane’s new project, Jasyki and the Dawn on 11/20 at Great American Music Hall (*WIN*). Dave Ellis joins Jay Lane, with special guests Angeline Saris, Jordan Feinstein, Dave Shul, Brian Rogers, Jon Chi, and Alcide Marshall. Check out the Spotlight below for more details and a chance to win tickets!

Here’s to being our own colorful selves and finding plenty of reasons to get out and dance. I’ll be the one with the magenta-red hair. See you on the dance floor, BISS Listers!

SPOTLIGHT ON JAY LANE

Jayski and the Dawn

Nov 20th @ Great American Music Hall

Win Tickets

Introducing a new project from Jay Lane, Jayski and the Dawn. Drawing on a career spanning Dead & Company, RatDog, Furthur, Wolf Bros, Primus, and the Charlie Hunter Trio, the drummer brings his musical worlds together in a collective rooted in jazz, funk, and soul. Jayski and the Dawn will be mashing up funk music with Grateful Dead music, extracting the funk from the Dead and extracting the jam from funk music.

Joining Jay is saxophonist Dave Ellis, his longtime collaborator in the Charlie Hunter Trio and RatDog. The lineup also features Angeline Saris, Jordan Feinstein, Dave Shul, Brian Rogers, Jon Chi, and Alcide Marshall. Together, they’re giving the Grateful Dead and Bob Weir catalogs fresh arrangements, with original material in the mix. With this much shared history and talent onstage, there’s plenty of room for familiar music to head somewhere unexpected.

SPOTLIGHT ON BAY AREA GROOVES

Koobi Fora + Free Moment ft Sunshine Becker

Nov 6th @ Boom Boom Room

Win Tickets

Make sure to get to Boom Boom Room early for this one, because opening the night is Free Moment, a new project featuring founding members of Passenger. With Chris Reale on guitar, Bill Becker on bass, Mark Abbott on drums, and Marshall Luck on keyboards. Sunshine Garcia Becker joins as a special guest. Expect heavy grooves, dynamic builds, psychedelic textures, funky pockets and plenty of room for the musicians to interact and take chances.

Then Koobi Fora brings its blend of funk and jam-band exploration into the late night, with guitarist and vocalist Jackson Haddad, bassist and vocalist Taylor Garland, and drummer Glenn joined by pianist Josh Gelfand. Josh’s keys add another voice to the band’s musical conversation, weaving through guitar solos and strengthening the grooves as catchy songs open into extended improvisations before finding their way home.

BISS REVIEW

Violet Grohl proves the real deal

Violet Grohl, daughter of Dave Grohl, mesmerized the sold-out crowd at Rickshaw Stop with powerful vocals, confident stage presence, and songwriting that stands on its own. Sean Reiter caught the 20-year-old singer on her first headlining tour and shares why her next visit will likely need a bigger room. Check out the full review here.
