BISS List 10.1.26 Spotlight on moe. + The Best of BISS This Week and More

Happy Hardly Strictly, my friends!

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is upon us! Are you doing your deep knee bends? Pre-hydrating? Getting ready for the annual trek across Golden Gate Park? I want to know your plan. Which stage are you setting up blankets at? How early are you getting there? Who are your must-sees? Are you camping out in one spot or bouncing from stage to stage? And which schedule conflict is already making you crazy? It’s one of the biggest live music weekends of the year in San Francisco, and it’s definitely going to be a big part of all of our weekends.

Last week was all about Casa Del Sol’s House of Love at the Boom Boom Room, and what a night! There were so many incredible musicians rotating on and off that stage; it was almost impossible to keep track, but I did! Check out my photos from the night and all of the videos on the BISS List YouTube playlist. And while you’re there, please subscribe to the BISS List YouTube channel. It really helps! Our girl Natalie from the BISS team got to see Jason Crobsy & Friends last Thursday at Forever Grateful’s jazz night, and she shared a few videos here.

On My Radar: This week’s Hot List is the biggest one we’ve ever had, and we still couldn’t fit everything in! There is an insane amount of music happening this week, and that’s in addition to all things Hardly Strictly. Tonight, I’m heading to Forever Grateful for the Gospel installment, The Psychedelic Church, featuring Sunshine Garcia Becker, Zoe Ellis, and Glide Choir. They’re offering a 2 for 1 ticket special at the moment, so grab your ticket. Can’t wait to see the bus! My late nights will be at Boom Boom Room with Muziek on Friday and Tracorum on Saturday, and maybe a Billy Strings at Oakland Arena in there? You’ll find me at least one My Morning Jacket at The Fillmore within this seven night run. So many choices, so hard to decide!

Mark Your Calendar: The Breaks are at The Independent on Thu 10/8, and you can check out my interview with Robert Walter before the show. On Fri 10/16, spend An Evening with moe. at The Regency Ballroom (*WIN*), more on this in the Spotlight below! Looking a little farther ahead, Allison Russell has two Bay Area dates coming up, Sat 11/14 at The Fillmore and Sun 11/15 at The UC Theatre. And speaking of Allison, make sure to check out Gabriel David Barkin’s fantastic interview with Allison Russell.

And if you still need help figuring out where to land this week, check out the Best of BISS, Full Calendar, and Win Tickets pages.

All right, I gotta go do some stretches and get HSB ready. See you out there, BISS Listers!

SPOTLIGHT ON MOE.

An Evening with moe.

October 16th @ The Regency Ballroom

Hailed by American Songwriter for their “mind-bending musicality,” moe. is treasured for their mesmerizing musical synergy, unfettered showmanship, and smart, resonant songcraft. For three decades, the band has corralled myriad musical forms on a truly original journey rich with crafty, clever songwriting and astonishing resourcefulness. Fueled by an impassioned fan base, moe. has spent much of those thirty years on the road, encompassing countless live performances marked by eclectic wit, deep friendship, and exploratory invention. They’ve built an enduring legacy with hard work and a confirmed commitment to creativity and community.

On Oct 16th, moe. brings An Evening with moe. to The Regency Ballroom for two full sets with no opener. The show is the second stop on their West Coast run, following the release of moe. Live at The Bellwether, 2/7/25, a limited-edition four-LP set from Relix, recorded in Los Angeles during the band’s 35th anniversary tour. The show’s underwater artwork comes from the album’s cover, created by Julie Ryan of Daisy Chain Design. Give the album a spin, then join moe. at The Regency for the real thing.

BISS INTERVIEW

Interview with Allison Russell

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Allison Russell chats with BISS Contributing Editor Gabriel David Barkin about her new album In the Hour of Chaos, her time on Broadway in Hadestown, the joy and connection she finds in live performance, and what’s next, including a new record, a book, and more theater. “I don’t ever phone it in,” Russell says of her approach to interviews—and this wide-ranging conversation is no exception. Check it out here.
