BISS List 3.5.26 Spotlight on American Beauties: Tribute to Bobby & Donna Jean (3.13) + The Best of BISS This Week
Happy almost Daylight Saving Time, BISS Listers!
The clocks jump forward this weekend, bringing longer evenings, a little more daylight, and one more nudge to get out the door and into a music room somewhere.
Over the past week,SF Music Week brought great energy to the city this year, with She Is The Music playing an active role throughout. SITM’s contributions to the week included a thoughtful conversation between Kelly McFarling and Emma Silvers, strong panel representation during the Industry Summit, and community connection with a table at Artist Development Day. I’m proud to be part of such a wonderful female-forward organization.
More show highlights from last week:
- Thu 2/26: House of Love with Casa Del Sol and Dagnasterpus was exactly the kind of “friends in the room” energy I expected. This new monthly series at Boom Boom Room lands every last Thursday and wraps the night with a jam. Check out my full recap with videos here.
- Thu 2/26: BISS Contributing Editor Gabriel David Barkin was out in Redwood City covering Circle Songs & Sands of Time, an all-star Bob Weir Tribute at Fox Theatre. Check out the full review & photos here.
- Sat 2/28: The night started with a killer opening set from Laz & Rin, the duo project from Lantz Lazwell and Rin Rin Rabbit, who sounded like a full band thanks to looping guitar, keys, and B3. The full LAZWELL set featuring Lady Chi kept Boom Boom Room moving and turned into a fun jam when RonKat, Kate Vargas, and Eric McFadden joined in. Check out the full recap and videos here.
On My Radar: Personally, I’m struggling with the fact that the calendar is stacked with so many great choices that deciding where to land each night might be the hardest part.
- Thu 3/5: Violent Femmes @ The Guild Theatre
- Thu 3/5: MonoNeon @ Yoshi’s Oakland
- Fri 3/6: Gogol Bordello @ The Warfield
- Fri 3/6: KATDELIC @ Boom Boom Room (*WIN*)
- Fri 3/6 & Sat 3/7: The Brian Jonestown Massacre @ The Chapel
- Sat 3/7: Melvin Seals & JGB @ The Warfield
- Sun 3/8: Hard To Handle: Danny’s Live Dead ft Grahame Lesh @ Golden Gate Park Panhandle
Mark Your Calendar: Here are a few shows worth circling for next weekend.
- 3/13: American Beauties: Women’s Day Celebration @ Ashkenaz (*WIN*) – This celebration of female soul and sound features Sunshine Becker, Anna Elva, Nancy Wenstrom, Jen Rund, Richelle Scales, and Nate LaPointe. They’ll be shining a light on Grateful Dead icons Bob Weir and Donna Jean Godchaux-McKay. More on this in the spotlight below.
- 3/13: Marmot King’s Game Night @ Manny’s Cafe – I’ll be co-hosting this edition. Expect community, good old analog fun, some new themed games, and a few surprises as we lean into the Friday the 13th theme.
- 3/14: ALO – Tour d’Amour XVIII @ The Fillmore (*WIN*) – With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, consider this your chance to find your pot of gold in a room full of fans celebrating the “All that Glitters Is Gold” theme. Check out Gabriel David Barkin’s photo gallery of the shows in Sacramento and Tahoe for a taste of the tour.
You are always invited to choose your own top picks. Check out the Best of BISS highlights below or on our website, explore the Full Calendar, or head to the Win Tickets page for chances at free tickets.
With the clocks jumping forward and the days getting longer, it’s the perfect time to get out and see more music. Wherever you land, I hope you find a good groove, a familiar face, and maybe a new favorite band.

SPOTLIGHT ON AMERICAN BEAUTIES
American Beauties: Women’s Day Celebration
& Tribute to Bobby Weir and Donna Jean
March 13th @ Ashkenaz
For the fourth year in a row, the female-fronted collective American Beauties returns with its annual celebration of International Women’s Month, this time honoring the legacy of Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay and the enduring spirit of Bobby Weir. The Bay Area rooted Grateful Dead/JGB inspired ensemble will illuminate the night as only this powerful group of women players can.
Featuring Sunshine Becker, Anna Elva, Jen Rund, Richelle Scales, and Nancy Wengstrom, with Cubensis guitarist Nate LaPointe joining the lineup. The evening will highlight songs that place women at the heart of the Grateful Dead’s storytelling and honor Donna Jean’s influential era with the band.
The night will serve as both tribute and celebration, coming together to honor the past while keeping the Grateful Dead’s music evolving through the voices and musicianship of women carrying the tradition forward.
