BISS List 11.13.24: Spotlight on Katdelic (11.15) + Best of BISS this Week
Happy National Hug a Musician Day & World Kindness Day! I don’t think either of those needs much explanation, so just go ahead and hug a musician. And let’s make it kindness week—actually, how about kindness for life?! AND a big Happy Birthday to RonKat!
Over the weekend, a BISS List follower shared with me that, as she’s feeling worried about the country’s future, she’s counting on me and the BISS List to get her through. It touched me deeply, but I have to admit I’m struggling to keep it going. Running the BISS List has been a labor of love for 20 years, but I am finding myself spending more time and money than ever before and I am not sure how much longer I can keep this up.
So, on behalf of her and everyone who believes the BISS List is worth saving, I’m making another heartfelt pitch to help keep this community alive.
Keeping the BISS List sustainable on a shoestring budget with a small team has always been tough. To those of you who have joined our Patreon—thank you for directly helping to keep this dream going! And to everyone who has volunteered time, you are the heartbeat of this community. Your support has made an incredible difference.
However, between the costs of the website, mailing lists, social media management—and the countless hours I pour into it—I’m at a crossroads. If the BISS List has brought you closer to the Bay Area music scene, introduced you to new favorites, or connected you with fellow fans, please consider supporting us. Joining the Patreon is one way, and there are also plenty of volunteer opportunities! We could use help with tasks like organizing photos, managing playlists, updating calendars, or sharing posts on social media. We’d even be thrilled to set up a formal internship for someone interested in music and community work.
The BISS List will always be free on email, Instagram, Facebook, and our website. But if you’d like to support us through Patreon, you’ll enjoy perks like Instant Wins, Dance Card Fillers, Exclusive Giveaways, and more. Every bit helps, whether it’s a dollar, an hour of your time, or just spreading the word. Thank you for being part of this journey! Check out our Patreon, or reply to ask about other ways you can help.
Now, let’s dive into the musical portion of this week’s BISS List, starting with the shows I attended this past week:
Wednesday, 11/6: GamperDrums Funk Jazz at Black Cat SF, featuring Chris Gamper, Fletcher Nielsen, Dann Zinn and Dewayne Pate. I finally made it to the Black Cat on Eddy in the TL. I’ve listed some big names playing there, but I had no idea what a swanky, intimate venue it was! The food and cocktails were great, and it was a much-needed night out.
Thursday, 11/7: The night kicked off with Reed Mathis’ In The Now at Sweetwater. It’s always a treat, with a lineup that never disappoints. This time, we enjoyed Reed Mathis with Adam MacDougall (Circles Around the Sun) on keys and Neal “Fro” Evans (Dopapod) on drums. It was cool to get a double dose of Fro since this is his last tour. Then Dopapod took over and turned the Sweetwater into a Funktronic Dance Party, with Reed Mathis joining them for a song. So fun!
Friday, 11/8: We headed down to Longboard in Pacifica, another new venue for me. You’d never expect to find this spot nestled in a shopping plaza, but it was fantastic. It’s a real neighborhood place, complete with pool tables, friendly bartenders, and a loyal crew. The sound is excellent on the lower level, and LAZWELL rocked the house, as always. It was a great night of dancing with friends!
Saturday, 11/9: We celebrated Red Hot Mama’s birthday in style, hitting three bands in two venues! We started at the Indy with Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) opening, followed by Karina Rykman, who was a whirlwind of energy, jumping around the stage and laying down badass basslines. Then we raced over to the Boom Boom Room, where Afrolicious brought the afro-funk grooves. It was the perfect birthday bash!
Saturday, 11/19: While I couldn’t be in two places at once, I’m grateful for the amazing BISS List community that helps keep us all in the loop. This past weekend, there was an epic Zero show at the Mystic in Petaluma. Luckily, BISS List Contributing Editor Gabriel Barkin was there to capture and review the experience for you. Be sure to check out his review—more details are just a scroll away!

BISS REVIEW
Zero Celebrates 40 Years
“If you want to enumerate all the amazing San Francisco Bay Area rock, fusion, and jam bands that have played a role in the region’s storied musical history, you might want to start your count with Zero. Okay, that’s a silly pun. But it’s no joke that Zero has earned a spot among the pantheon of notable NorCal ensembles in the four decades since their early-1980s inception in Marin County. Zero celebrated their 40-year legacy with two sold-out shows at The Mystic Theater in Petaluma on Friday and Saturday night this past weekend.” Check out the full review & photos from Gabriel Barkin.
