Blue Note Napa outdoor Summer Sessions! Location: The Meritage Resort and Spa at 850 Bordeaux Way Napa 94558. Doors 5:30PM / Show 7PM event is OUTSIDE, RAIN OR SHINE. Violent Femmes formed in 1981 as an acoustic punk band playing on the streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their main influences were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and The Velvet Underground. After being rejected for an audition by a local nightclub, the Femmes set up outside a Pretenders gig and began to play. Pretenders’ lead singer Chrissie Hynde asked them to open that night’s show, which gave the young band a publicity boost and caught the attention of Richard Hell, who invited the Femmes to open for him in NYC. A rave review in the New York Times eventually led to a record deal, which in turn spawned worldwide touring. Fitz Albert Cotterell aka Prezident Brown was born in Johnny’s Hill district on the Bullhead Mountain, Jamaica in the mid-1960’s and raised in Oracabessa, St Mary. He built up a reputation by performing on local sound systems throughout the 1980’s, under various names including Junior Ranking, before starting his recording career in the late 1980’s. He was given the name Prezident Brown by producer and sound system operator Jack Ruby, who made him the resident deejay on his Hi-Power sound system.

Harrington Street in San Francisco’s Excelsior District is being renamed Jerry Garcia Street in honor of the Grateful Dead guitarist, who grew up on that block. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the resolution to rename the street, which is a short, one-block stretch between Alemany Boulevard and Mission Street. The change officially recognizes the site of Garcia’s childhood home, a yellow house where he lived with his grandparents after his father’s death.
