Funk: Fred Wesley & The New JB’s are the primary keepers of roots funk music. Wesley, one of the forefathers of funk, is the legendary bandleader, trombonist who helped make James Brown’s music what it was and later played a key role in the development of P-Funk. From 1968 to 1975, Wesley was music director, arranger, trombonist, and a primary composer for James Brown’s Band, The J.B.’s. And he is credited with helping the band to shift its sound from soul to funk.

KC Turner Presents: COOKOUT CONCERT SERIES: SHINYRIBS defies genres as a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn-driven Memphis soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. Blues guitarist celebrating her new album, “TRUTH IS”. After she scratched her mother’s vintage Martin guitar by imitating Pete Townsend’s famous windmill move, she was forbidden from using a pick. Because of that, she developed her aggressive, distinctive fingerpicking guitar attack. By age 15, she was performing at Houston’s famed Fitzgerald’s club, playing solo or with friends. As a 16-year-old, she swapped songs with Townes Van Zandt. She formed her first band when she was 17, and began proving herself on the tough, competitive Houston club scene.

Fitz Albert Cotterell aka Prezident Brown was born in Johnny’s Hill district on the Bullhead Mountain, Jamaica in the mid-1960’s and raised in Oracabessa, St Mary. He built up a reputation by performing on local sound systems throughout the 1980’s, under various names including Junior Ranking, before starting his recording career in the late 1980’s. He was given the name Prezident Brown by producer and sound system operator Jack Ruby, who made him the resident deejay on his Hi-Power sound system.

The Haight Street Art Center honors music icon and celebrated visual artist Mickey Hart with the opening of a groundbreaking exhibition. The legendary Grateful Dead drummer’s unique and powerful installation— featuring nearly 100 paintings and prints on canvas, paper, plexiglass, metal, drumheads, and cymbals — marks the first show in a San Francisco based museum for the three-time Grammy Award winner. The exhibition kicks off with an epic opening celebration on July 31 from 4-9pm, the evening before Dead & Company kicks off three sold-out shows in Golden Gate Park, honoring the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the resolution to rename the street, which is a short, one-block stretch between Alemany Boulevard and Mission Street.
