BMG PRESENTS -Roots reggae rose in the 1970s as a voice of resistance, echoing far beyond the Caribbean. For Sicilian-born Alberto D’Ascola–now known as Alborosie–reggae became a calling. “My reggae is 2025,” he says. Born in Marsala in 1977, he discovered the genre at 15 through a Bob Marley cassette and a TV ad playing “Jamming.” Soon, he taught himself instruments and formed Reggae National Tickets, a band that gave voice to Europe’s disillusioned youth. But he craved authenticity. At 18, he traveled to Jamaica, where repeated visits revealed reggae’s spiritual roots. In 2003, he left Italy for Kingston to pursue a solo career. Locals dubbed him “borosie”–a dismissive term he reclaimed as his stage name.

The UGLY Tour: Teddy Swims announced that The UGLY Tour will make a stop at Chase Center after the start of a brand-new era with “Mr. Know It All,” an instantly catchy and deceptively breezy cut about the pain of romantic self-sabotage. “Mr. Know It All” mixes vintage grooves, ’80s rock hook-craft, and lush modern production to build a moody but cool backdrop for Swims’ soul-searching lyrics. Amid sharp pizzicato strings and pillowy guitar, Swims delivers the brutal chorus: “Shoulda told you I could see this coming, like I’m lookin’ right into a crystal ball / When I fall in love it’s with misfortune, oh, I wish I wasn’t Mr. Know It All.” Swims performed the song live for the first time last Friday at his star studded mainstage Coachella set – which featured appearances from David Lee Roth, Joe Jonas, and Vanessa Carlton. Last year was especially monumental for Swims, who wrapped a sold-out global tour, earned his second…

Born in Los Angeles, California, Robby Krieger was convinced by a Chuck Berry concert to give rock music a go, which resulted in the guitarist trading in his classical guitar in for a Gibson SG, an instrument that would eventually become his signature instrument. Studying physics and Indian music at UCLA, Krieger played in bands with friends, and eventually bumped into a drummer he’d met a few years before, John Densmore. The two began jamming on blues together, while Krieger’s interest in Indian music and culture continued to flourish, as he began dabbling with sitars (studying at the Kinnara School, which was founded by Ravi Shankar), and attending meditation classes. It was at one of these meditation classes that Krieger met keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Manzarek eventually convinced Krieger to come down and rehearse with a poet/singer he’d been working with, Jim Morrison. Their first rehearsal supposedly resulted in the penning of “Moonlight Drive,” resulting in the birth of the Doors.…

We live in a time when our thumbs know more than our minds. We scroll past each other’s joy and grief before breakfast, absorb a day’s worth of tragedy by lunch, and still convince ourselves that the next notification might be the dopamine hit that’ll make us feel better. As much as some of us complain about smartphones — or, more specifically, what’s on said smartphones — distraction is the air we breathe. Social media, surveillance, endless updates and countless opinions, it all piles up until focus feels like a luxury item. For Thundercat, the clutter isn’t abstract. And on Distracted, his long-awaited fifth studio album, it’s the central theme of his life and art right now.

Once here, GWAR, the original Ancient Aliens, shaped the face of the globe, wiping out the dinosaurs, and mating with apes to create the human race. jazz, funk, soul, avant garde, experimental, acid jazz: Sometimes when four musicians get in a room and just let the music happen, magic happens. That’s the case with Gretchen Menn, Daniele Gottardo, Michael Manring, and Scott Amendola. Going into the first time playing together, they all held deep respect and admiration for each other. The concept was clear and open: let’s just play. While all accomplished and passionate composers, with each other they found a chance to explore something different and immediate. For 58 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums. The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Fifty years later, in 2018, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit had been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence.

Wildfires, floods, quarantine and isolation, protests, riots, and raising children who are coming into awareness of these issues all influenced Jon Chi as he wrote the words and music to his 3rd solo album, River of Marigolds. “How do you take struggle and adversity and turn that into hope and love?” is a central question on the album, Chi says. The Marin County-based songwriter, guitarist, and producer coalesces disparate styles here that he has explored on prior releases. Chi’s lyrics, at times dark and moody and at others hopeful, meld with a musical blend of spacious Americana and psychedelic soul. Much of the album features Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) on bass along with long-time rhythm collaborators John-Paul McLean and Jeremy Hoenig (Melvin Seals and JGB), Jordan Feinstein and Mike Emerson on keyboards, and pedal steel ace Dave Zirbel. Jon is the former frontman for the band Rainmaker who found their fans among the jamband and world music scene.

ivy room presents – garage, rock, soul – The Flamin’ Groovies’ story goes all the way back to 1965, when the band began as the Chosen Few in their hometown of San Francisco, California. Their next two albums were released on the Kama Sutra label: Flamingo, and the now revered classic Teenage Head. Lead singer Roy Loney then left the band and lead guitarist Cyril Jordan moved the group to England, with Chris Wilson (formerly of Loose Gravel) taking over as front man. They continued their style of straight-ahead guitar-driven rock n’ roll but this time with a more 60’s rather than 50’s influence. Poor Man’s Whiskey is an Americana band originating in the San Francisco area in 2001. The music is rooted around the songwriting talents of Josh Brough and Jason Beard (who met in 1993 at the University of California, Santa Barbara). Poor Man’s Whiskey’s live show and sound is a blend of high octane old time/bluegrass music (often done on traditional acoustic instruments of banjo, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin) and a more psychedelic blues/jam rock style that calls upon their earlier influences such as Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers Band, and the Grateful Dead.

Love always. Love forever. Love until the end of time. The Great Cosmic Playlist is testimony to the endurance of an emotion that is easy to conjure but hard to maintain. But for Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, who have been coupled consciously since 1986, love is more than a pop song; they are the bards of the long term committed relationship. “As soon as I saw her, I knew she was the one,” says Larry. That epiphany occurred in a Manhattan rehearsal studio. Teresa, an actress and vocalist not long removed from Peckerwood Point, TN, had been pulled into a singing contest. Larry, the New York City native with a burgeoning reputation for his virtuosity on any instrument with strings, was brought in to play pedal steel guitar. “For me, it was love at first note,” she says. Together they went on to capture a greater prize. From the beginning, they shared a musical sensibility; Larry courted her with…

new wave, garage rock, punk, satirical folk rock: If the Psycotic Pineapple could be defined as “punk”, then they are the first punk band from the Bay Area, the first version started in 1974. If not, they might be classified as Pre-Punk Garage Rock Pop Satire. Take your pick. The band’s musical ability outshines most of the other punk/garage bands that have come and gone over the years. Though live performances are rare, they are still thrashing out their oddly obnoxious version of Rock’n’Roll. They have been attracting younger fans lately, partly because audiences are now more receptive to humor in Rock, unlike the 1970s. They will perform all of their classic “hits”, such as “I Wanna Wanna Wanna Wanna Wanna Wanna Wanna Get Rid of You” and “Headcheese”. Love ’em or hate ’em, the Psycotic Pineapple is never boring.

Anchored in the timeless charm of A Charlie Brown Christmas, the performance begins in familiar territory–warm piano melodies, swinging jazz rhythms, and the nostalgic spirit of the holidays. From there, the music begins to expand, weaving in improvisational explorations inspired by the Grateful Dead. The result is a joyful, genre-blending take on Guaraldi’s iconic themes, which open up into expansive jams and playful musical interplay. Both a loving tribute and an open-ended exploration, the show captures the innocence of Peanuts, the spirit of jazz, and the improvisational energy of the Dead.

They are widely known for their dazzling live performances and relentless touring schedule, but that is only the tip of the complex tale of the five musicians that make up Greensky Bluegrass: Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [Mandolin]. The five are connected through a deep bond, just as they are seasoned road warriors, they’re a band of brothers who have seen each other through decades of ups and downs, personal and collective highlights, and the moments when life turns it all upside down. These are real people having real experiences. As with traditional bluegrass, they write about their own contemporary day-to-day happenings, emotions, and experiences in the modern world.

Virginian, Keller Williams, released his first album in 1994, FREEK, and has since given each of his albums a single syllable title: BUZZ, SPUN, BREATHE, LOOP, LAUGH, HOME, DANCE, STAGE, GRASS, DREAM, TWELVE, LIVE, ODD, THIEF, KIDS, BASS, PICK, FUNK, VAPE, SYNC, RAW, SANS, ADD, SPEED, CELL, DROLL and now DEER. Each title serves as a concise summation of the concept guiding each project. Keller’s albums reflect his pursuit to create music that sounds like nothing else. Un-beholden to conventionalism, he seamlessly crosses genre boundaries. The end product is music that encompasses rock, jazz, funk and bluegrass, and always keeps the audience on their feet. Keller built his reputation initially on his engaging live performances, no two of which are ever alike. For most of his career he has performed solo. His stage shows are rooted around Keller singing his compositions and choice cover songs, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, bass, guitar synthesizer and drum samples; a technique called…

A dude named Steve Poltz (me) in East Nashville wakes up one morning and gets a call from another dude in East Nashville named Dex Green. Dex says, “Hey man, you live so close. You oughta come over and make some music. Maybe we’ll document it — who knows, maybe it’s a record.” Capturing me in a studio is like convincing a whirling dervish to stop spinning long enough to sign a bill into law. It’s chaos, caffeine, and accidental poetry — art colliding with microphones and commerce in a glorious mess. That’s how JoyRide happened. No seatbelts, no helmets. Just unsaturated, unadulterated art. Real humans making real noise in real time. JoyRide is my 14th solo album (not counting the Rugburns records, live things, and bootlegs floating around). I tour nonstop, so I usually have to be tricked into a studio under the guise of “just one song.” The record opens with “If It Bleeds It Leads” — my…

The Bouncing Souls are something of a punk rock institution. The band have been consistently churning out their beloved brand of anthemic punk since 1989, and have earned an intensely loyal fanbase with tireless touring and an unrelenting love of making music. As the band approached the creation of their tenth full length, they sought to make a record that captured the spirit of their earlier work, while incorporating who they are today. That record is Simplicity and its 13 tracks of undeniably infectious punk rock prove that The Bouncing Souls have a lot more to say.

Born Jepther Washington McClymont, the reggae artist “Luciano” has long reigned as the king of “conscious” reggae music. Living in Jamaica, Luciano was influenced by reggae icons such as Bob Marley and drawn to the positive message of the “one love movement”. Dubbed “Luciano” in reference to a comparison to the clear soaring vocals of Luciano Pavarotti, his voice resonates with impeccable intonation and pitch. Luciano paired with producer Freddy McGregor to record for his “Big Ship” label. This resulted in his first solid mark on the charts in the UK with a cover of Cheryl Lyn’s R & B hit “Shake it Up Tonight”. As this song hit the #1 position, his name began circulating amongst reggae producers like Phillip “Fattis” Burrell and the result was his 1993 recording “Moving Up” on the Xterminator label that was released to critical acclaim through VP Records. The album finds Alec Ounsworth writing through a difficult stretch that included the end of a relationship and the loss of his mother, uncle and a close friend. Written shortly after a 2025 tour celebrating the artist’s debut album, with live performance in mind, Burned sees Ounsworth looking at generational trauma and the nature of empathy. The sound, though, stays bright throughout, from the synth surge of lead single “Fever Of The Mind” to the gleaming rocker “Late Wish.” “It was important to me that Burned wasn’t all doom and gloom,” Ounsworth says.
