Happy Peanut Butter and Chocolate Day, BISS Listers!

Apparently that is a real thing, and honestly, I cannot think of a better excuse to celebrate a perfect combination. It is also the beginning of Leo season. Several of my friends are celebrating birthdays today, and my own birthday is exactly one month away. Do I need to begin celebrating an entire month early? Probably not. Am I going to consider it anyway?

Last Week in Review: After more than two months away, I finally made it back to live music last week…

Thu 7/16: Widespread Panic @ Fox Theater Oakland – The vibes were incredible, and it felt so good to see so many friends and be surrounded by live music again. Thanks to JP for the ticket and VIP treatment and Lysee for being a great PIC! Thanks to Gabriel David Barkin for capturing WSP for us!
Fri 7/17: Hedwig and the Angry Inch @ The Castro – My first time at the newly renovated theatre! My Fabulous BF and I got to see the movie on the big screen, followed by John Cameron Mitchell performing live with Skip the Needle. Sat 7/18: Honey Island Swamp Band @ Boom Boom Room – I celebrated the band’s 20th anniversary in the room where it all began. Check out my posts for photos & videos.

Three shows in three nights felt amazing, but they also reminded me that getting back out there needs to be a marathon, not a sprint. I am learning to undercommit instead of letting my overly ambitious little brain schedule every great show on the calendar.

Peanut butter and chocolate may be today’s official perfect combo, but this week reminded me that the best combinations come in all forms… a movie and a live performance, a favorite band and the room where it all began, longtime friends and new memories, and the right balance of music and rest.

Rebirth Brass Band & The Soul Rebels

August 8th @ Siesta Valley Bowl

Two of New Orleans’ most electrifying brass bands come together for one epic night at Siesta Valley Bowl.

Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band has carried the sound of New Orleans from the streets of the French Quarter to stages around the world, blending traditional brass-band music with funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop. Their legendary live shows are joyful, explosive and impossible to experience sitting down.

The Soul Rebels bring their own genre-bending take on the New Orleans tradition, mixing brass, funk, rock, pop and hip-hop into a unique sound that has led to collaborations with everyone from Nas and Wu-Tang Clan to Metallica, Green Day and The Rolling Stones.

Now, for the first time, Rebirth Brass Band and The Soul Rebels share the bill for an unforgettable outdoor dance party under the stars. Come early, bring your friends and wear shoes made for dancing. This is going to be a dance party of New Orleans music, culture and rhythm.

August 1st @ Boom Boom Room

Celebrating the music of the Grateful Dead and P Funk, and everything in between!

You can’t get much more legit than DJ Logic, who’s performed with Bob Weir and so many others over the years. This will be a special DJ hybrid show. Logic is not just spinning, he is performing as part of a collaborative group featuring Lantz Lazwell on guitar and Brian Swislow on keys, with an added special element when Starchild Jr of Parliament Funkadelic fame joins on guitar and vocals. They’re bringing funk, psychedelia, deep grooves, improvisation, dance floors, late nights, and some serious musicianship.
